dmoz and categories

I was wondering about dmoz categories and wonder if you had a gallery of cameron diaz (just an example) would you not say she is latin because of blonde hair and blue eyes , or would a light skin black person like mariah carey not be considered black even though she is , or what about very black puerto ricans , would they not be considered latin? just wondering??

AdultNex 04-27-2003 02:23 PM

Are you trying to submit a gallery to Dmoz?

:eek2

Exxxotica 04-27-2003 02:41 PM

Is there really such a thing as a "dmoz editor", or are they just an urban legend like big foot?

I dont think they really exist. Maybee they did at one time... but now they are extinct.

If you are looking for 'stars', there is a celebrity category.

If the girls are not stars, you need to look at the girl and figure out what nationality they LOOK like. For the most part this is easy enough to figure out.

Surfers looking through any directory...nationality especially, are looking at one particular TYPE of look.

digi 04-27-2003 03:05 PM

mariah carey got a white moma so she is just as white as she is black.

appleboy 04-27-2003 03:16 PM

so the LOOK is what determines the appropiate placement? , Now if I was from Miami wouldn't the LOOK be different than if I was from Montana or New York ?

I'm an editor at DMOZ. We work on a totally volunteer basis and with tens of thousands of categories, there are never enough of us. If you're submitting to a large category or a category with no editors, you should assume it will be many months before you get listed (especially if the category has no editor listed).

You heard the sun today / There she blows, there she blows / You saw the wind a`shining / You don`t know, you don`t know / You felt a tree that does fall / You don`t know that`s OK / You don`t have much taste for the bouquet / I`m bored with the valleys and bored with the peaks / So I bought a ticket to the freaks / I saw a chicken with two heads / Saw something else that was headless / Then P.T. see the egress / `Cause you move when the salesman speaks / I superabound / But I still got nothing to do / A space is made by telephone / They thought time would be overthrown / And they compiled a wish list / From Mars to duels to a dish kissed / I tried to talk to the ishist / But he was debating with his clone / I superabound / But I still got nothing to do / Well, they thought it was a coup / But I still got nothing to do / You must see my domicile / I had it built in decastyle / The other day at the potlach / Come visiting was a sasquatch / He said although I`m a mismatch / Could I stay just for awhile ? / `Cause the likes of us are few / And we still got nothing to do / I superabound / But I still got nothing to do

I bet you get listed pretty quick eh? :)

Bobby Fissure 04-27-2003 05:45 PM

DMOZ editors always whine that there aren't enough of them for all the submissions they get. Well, many of us who are somewhat qualified (meaning that we have a pulse and a non-defective brain, which is already better than most of the current DMOZ staff) would like to become editors, but we've been ignored or simply rejected for unknown reasons.

Yup, this happens.....I was rejected twice before being accepted....

MandyD 04-27-2003 07:32 PM

I'm pretty sure there was a thread about 2 months ago in here full of tips on how to become an Dmoz editor, if you want to apply to become an editor, maybe you would be best searching for it :)

extreme 04-27-2003 07:37 PM

The biggest mistake most people who apply do is ask to become an editor for a too large part of Dmoz.

Apply for your local town category or something like that. Once you have a bunch of edits apply where you actually want to be.

You can apply to a category even if there already is an editor there, I'd actually say the chance of acceptance is higher then.

How difficult is it to become an editor in the adult category?

I hear nothing but bad things about ODP all the way from the fuckwit search engine spammers who run the little niche subcategories all the way to the top meta's.

It's not easy amd there really isn't much of a reward for it. They reject a lot of applications for a lot of reasons because the rules for editors who get accepted are extremely tight.

I don't know what bad things you've heard, but I have a lot of respect for the ODP. The category I started out in is one I don't even have sites for. I applied because I think search engines like Google and Altavista are crap. I think most of the editors are like me; they want to be part of building a truly useful search database. We don't take weeks to list people because we feel like it, it just works out that way.

That pretty much sums it up. It's kind of sad to see people slam dmoz, since it really is an open project. It's like people who filthify bathrooms. The main reason adult is messy is that it gets a surfeit of messy submissions.

Now if one of these complainers were really organized, perhaps they could devise a better filtering process and/or volunteer management system and/or workload balance self correction system. But they aren't even organized enough to use the search feature on gfy.

What perhaps should get them pissed off is the sudden knowledge that it's possible to get into yahoo without paying the $600. That's right my little nematodes.

Lily 04-27-2003 08:49 PM

I used to be an editor at DMOZ too. I got accepted on my second application.

I quit because:

1. Like SpaceAce said, "there really isn't much of a reward for it." There's actually NO reward for it lol not that I expected one.

2. I just ran out of time and started feeling bad that I was taking so long to list things...people would email after a week and complain.

3. It was really confusing. I'd been an editor for about a year and a half and almost every time I logged in to edit, I ended up reading through things for hours trying to figure out what to do with some sites.

I was in the phone sex category and though the sites are supposedly split up by "billing method", the cats actually had NOTHING to do with billing method...it was all the type of phone number. Then we had to keep track of EVERY phone number on EVERY site ever submitted....it was just too much to keep track of.

On another note, Cameron Diaz is the whitest white girl I've ever seen. Is she actually latin or does someone just think that because of her last name?

I can't say.

Ice-T - The Girl Tried To Kill Me lyrics
[Verse One:]

Yo! I met this girl the other night
Hype super-dope body and face, her mini-skirt tight
Talkin' 'bout legs and lips, mindblowin' hips
Had to cross my legs just to look at her tits
Said she came out lookin' for some fun
Looked me in my eyes and told me...I was the one
I said "Why?", she said I was fly
Grabbed me by my hand and I thought I would die
Said she wanted to take me home to make love
Now that's the kind of rap that brothers dream of
I said, "Fast, slow, hard or soft, baby?"
She said, "All the above"

This girl tried to kill me, she didn't use a gun or a knife
This girl tried to kill me, took me within a inch of my life

[Verse Two:]

Now, I ain't no sucker on the weak tip
But let me tell you, she was on some motherfuckin' sex trip
Took me to her crib that night, leather and spikes
Broke out the rope and the dope strobe-light
And started buggin', lightin' candles all over the room
Then she did a backflip, landed on my dick
I knew that I would be dead soon

This girl tried to kill me, she didn't use a gun or a knife
This girl tried to kill me, took me within a inch of my life
This girl tried to kill me, she didn't use a bomb or a gun
This girl tried to kill me, homeboys, watch out for this one

[Verse Three:]

Yo, my pants were on, but so what?
She ripped off my shirt and tied my monkey-ass up
Faster than I could say "No!"
It was like a rodeo, I was with a sex nut
I looked in her face...
She sweated and she grinned with delight
And then she broke out a whip, I said "Shit!"
This girl had crazy plans for the night

This girl tried to kill me, she didn't use a bomb or a gun
This girl tried to kill me, homeboys, watch out for this one
This girl tried to kill me, she didn't use a gun or a knife
This girl tried to kill me, took me within a inch of my life

[Verse Four:]

Now whips ain't all that she had
All kinda crazy shit was at this bitch's pad
I'm talkin' about latex suits, spike-heeled boots
Oversized vibrators so that she could get loose
I said, "Don't...don't...don't whip me!
I'll do anything you ask!"
And then homegirl stripped, 38" tits
Man you shoulda seen that ass

This girl tried to kill me, she didn't use a gun or a knife
This girl tried to kill me, took me within a inch of my life
This freak tried to kill me, she didn't use a bomb or a gun
This girl tried to kill me, homeboys, watch out for this one

[Verse Five:]

My dick was harder than a bulletproof vest
She started pourin' baby oil on her chest
And then she said, "Gimme gimme gimme"
Jumped on my Jimmy, and rode me like the Wild West
I almost passed out, then the front door cold bust in
It was her fuckin' husband, six-foot ten
I knew my life would soon end

Homeboy tried to kill me, he didn't use a bomb or a gun
Homeboy tried to kill me, yo...yo, nowhere to run
Homeboy tried to kill me, he didn't use a gun or a knife
Homeboy tried to kill me, cos he had caught me fuckin' his wife
Yo...
