After some basic portscanning they are gonna figure out what services your machine runs and try to hack those. Should they fail you're going to suffer a massive DDoS attack which might last a couple of days.

what's the best way to prevent this? my IP is static.

ServerGenius 04-27-2003 04:18 AM

I agree.
Thats pretty much the worst thing that could happen.

Get a proxy.

HairToStay 04-27-2003 07:02 AM

Get a port scanner and plug the open holes it finds

Talk to level 3 tech at your ISP and tell them you may be subject to a DOS attack and ask them if they can filter it at the router.

Renew the lease on your IP.

Change ISPs :)

You can go to grc.com to the "Shields Up" section and see what ports are open. I don't know if you are on a home network but I would make sure that if I were on windows "file sharing" was disabled and that I was updated with the latest security patches.

I am on a home network and use a NAT router and most of my ports would not show up on a port scanner. This capability is pretty much available on any hardware router. Additionally I have a software based router (Kerio). Zone Alarm, Tiny, Black Ice are a few others. This provides a second layer of protection. I would definetely do one or the other or BOTH if I had a broadband connection with a fixed IP.

Good Luck!

But good try anyways.

your IP is on the apache logs all over the web... wtf are you worrying about? IP address is not meant to be hidden. All security systems are designed assuming your IP address, port info's etc are available to others.

take a chill pill

dude, no need to take a chill pill. i'm relaxed.
i'm aware my ip is everywhere, but the majority of people don't intend to use it maliciously.

this guy might, and i'm asking what the worst he could do is.

Just shutdown your computer, go to the store you bought it and tell the storesman that you need a toaster with a mouse (or hamster) plugged on it. After that, plug the cable to the toaster and wait untill the hacker kills it.

Now with no joke.

Do not worry dude, I know your IP address. Its something between 1.1.1.1 and 255.255.255.255. Anyone can attack you without even knowing your IP, just by making a random scan on the net and targeting your box.
If you are not some important person then they will let you alive :)
