No, not proxy bidding. I snipe every auction I want, without any program.
All it takes is a cable connection.
30 seconds before the auction ends, place your highest bid. Not the incremental bid, but the highest you'll pay. Make sure it's not a round dollar amount or cents amount. Once your bid is in, keep refreshing to make sure no one else takes it.

If you're not used to doing that, try it at one minute instead - long enough to put in another bid but too soon for the person to get their outbid notice and come fix things.

I do it in the last ten seconds.

How do you expect it to bid for you, osmosis? To make a bid on ebay you have to first log in.

proxy bidding is different from auction sniping.

proxy bidding works like this:
the current bid is $10 and the increment is $1 a bid.
you want to spend $100 max on the item, so you put that in as the proxy bid.
ebay will bring the current bid up to $11 with you as the leading bidder.
if someone comes along and bids $12, the bid will go up to $13 with you as the highest bidder. if someone else comes along and bids $20, the bid will go up to $21 with you as the highest bidder.

basically, everytime someone bids below $100, the price will increase by the bid increment with you as the highest bidder until it goes over $100. then you'll lose.

with an auction sniper, you set your max bid and it'll bid for you seconds before the auction ends.

you can snipe yourself too... just download the ebay toolbar and it gives you reminders so you can bid on the auction in the last minute

That's what I do. All you need is a working clock, broadband connection, and the handy copy-and-paste tool.

I'm able to bid at the last 4-5 sec. this way.

Yeah, Esnipe KICKS ASS !!! I just won an auction a few days ago with it. It's nice telling them what to bid on and when exactly to place the bid. Plus it's nice for those late night auctions that end at 4 in the morning, ha ha ha. It used to be a free service a while ago, but I believe that they give you a free trial, then charge per sucessful snipe, HOWEVER, I've never been charged yet :)
