Thanks a lot, TSA! Warning to those who travel with valuable/fragile items.
After coming home from traveling in Mexico for 6 months, I got a big surprise from the TSA. I have taken at least 6 flights with 2 of these Dell 27" Ultrasharp U2715Hc monitors before this flight with no problems. I pack a thick layer of soft clothing first on the bottom of my luggage (one monitor per large luggage bag), then lay the monitors flat with screens facing down to clothing with a towel covering the screen. I never pack anything solid below the screens.

that's a rather large and fragile thing to put in luggage lol

If the TSA had repacked the luggage the way I had, it would have been fine. I have taken at least 6 flights with these before. This is the first time the TSA inspected my luggage. This wasn't for a weekend trip. I lived in Mexico for 6 months before this flight.

I never check luggage. I met up with LAJ in Burbank last year - He was a week and a half trip and I was on a four day trip. I had a huge suitcase and he had a small carry on. That's when I decided I needed to pack lighter.
When I travel I roll with a small 17" AOC monitor... USB, super small... I always carry it in my carry on luggage. I never check luggage this point. In fact... Here is my Microsoft Surface and my monitor in a hotel room some place.... https://content.screencast.com/users...11-22_1540.png |

a friend of mine moved to Hungary last month and checked two giant pcs so he can render there. i thought that was pretty crazy. i've lived and worked all over the world. i never bring more than a laptop and some drives. monitors are a couple hundred bucks at most. 22" are under $100 now. i have 6 monitors on my desk and i'm moving next year. it would be cheaper to pack them, but also a huge pain in the ass. i have other priorities, like not hauling 6 big ass monitors all over the world lol sorry to derail your TSA rant :1orglaugh |
oh man :S

Tape bubble wrap over the screens...or cardboard...

Now that I thought about it. If any of you have large, fragile electronics to ship, buy a pelican case for it (see Single Lid Case Size Chart | Pelican Professional ).
I have one and it's great. There's no way a fucker can mis-package it since the compartment will be pre-cut-out. It's like $500 for one but, depending on the price of your equipment, it might be worth it. (Note, check the check-in weight limit for your flight. The case and equipment might be over the weight limit of some airlines). For me, I just use Duet (an iOS/Mac app) and an iPad as a second screen for my laptop. Best solution ever. |
Two 27" monitors for carry on....no problem!https://media.giphy.com/media/3o7TKF...NqZG/giphy.gif
