Bitcoin question

Hello GFY
When Bit coin fist came out , I set up an account and was paid 300 bit coins for a design job I did for someone, I lost interest etc and until recently didn't think much about it.
Is there a way of finding lost bit coins or getting old accounts working again?

Thanks GFY you have always been a great source of help?

Google Expert 11-17-2017 01:44 AM

Not unless you still have the wallet saved somewhere and remember the password.

Paul&John 11-17-2017 01:47 AM

300btc's.. nice!
I'm not sure but if you know the private key and password then it can be recovered?!

Bake 11-17-2017 01:47 AM

Thank you for the reply
I may know the password as i used the same generic one for many years for un important stuff. But what is the wallet bit?

adultchatpay 11-17-2017 02:23 AM

Wow, i hope you recover it. That is over $2M !!!!!!!!!

Mickey_ 11-17-2017 02:47 AM

There are various wallets to store them in. Some are online, some are offline. Do you remember the one you used?

bns666 11-17-2017 02:59 AM

good luck with that! :)

jscott 11-17-2017 03:14 AM

if you used Electrum or similar and still have your 12-24 seed words then you can install Electrum again and recover your account/bitcoins

you say you set up an account so i assume you had an online wallet. Search your emails or you can try 'login help' at the well known ones like blockchain.info or coinbase.com. Chances are you have your wallet there, so fill in your email you opened your account with back then, and they send you the address if it's at either one of them... if it is you know your wallet now and where its at, so all you need is your password (could be asking for a private key as well though, then you're lost). Good luck! :thumbsup

freecartoonporn 11-17-2017 03:55 AM

try your old emails., when you received the funds in bitcoin wallet.,

and go from there.

rowan 11-17-2017 04:49 AM

Where did you receive the Bitcoin "to"?

Were you running a local Bitcoin client on your computer? In this instance, your funds are stored in a local wallet, which is basically a database of private cryptographic keys. If you lose your keys (ie delete the file, or HD dies), your funds are permanently lost.

Or were you using an online wallet service? If it was this, you may be able to recover your login user/pass and therefore your Bitcoins. This is assuming the online wallet website hasn't been "hacked" (air quotes) and shut down without reimbursing customers.

As freecartoonporn suggests, checking emails is a good start as it may tell you what method you used to store and receive them.

CurrentlySober 11-17-2017 04:56 AM

Is this you?

Kafka 11-17-2017 05:20 AM

Do you remember where you had an account?
If you had a local wallet you should have saved your private key otherwise you lost $2.1million :thumbsup

Mickey_ 11-17-2017 10:16 AM

BTW if all else fails and you can't get into your account/wallet, you can hire someone to try and break into it. If they succeed they'll charge you a %.

TheDynasty 11-17-2017 11:16 AM

do you know how many keys private keys and 2auths i have to go through to even login , good luck!

but you need to find your wallet address

2MuchMark 11-17-2017 12:53 PM

300 coins? If you're serious, that's worth $2.4 Million dollars today. And more importantly, it makes me your new best friend! :)

Go over all of your notes and find out how you were paid. Most probably, you were paid directly to your own bitcoin wallet. If thats the case, those coins are still in that wallet, and still on that computer. Hopefully, you still have both, and haven't reformatted your hard disk.

Look around for the bitcoin wallet software you had, for example, Multibit. Load up the program and enter your password. If you don't remember your password, you will need to restore it but doing so is tough. If it uses the Lighthouse BIP32 format, you would have written down a series of words like Home, Train, Orange, Car, and about 12 other words in a certain order. You would need these words to restore your wallet but of course this depends on the wallet you used.

Good luck! And yes, you CAN buy me a Tesla Model S, my new friend! :)

bns666 11-17-2017 01:00 PM

let us know if you managed to get to those 300 btc :)

Whoah there, partner. If he was paid 300 Bitcoins for a job it would have been many years ago, possibly when Bitcoin Core was really the only client (it wouldn't have even been "Core" then). May not have even supported an encrypted wallet at the time, let alone fancy things like recovery phrases.

The mention of an 'account' in the OP makes me think it may be an online wallet service. Hopefully one that still survives today.

Why 11-17-2017 04:15 PM

sounds like a shit situation.

So if some wallet provider goes down you lose your coins?

Ps: Lets hope this is actual and not troll thread :) It sounds way too casual to just suddenly remember about 2 million bucks :1orglaugh

Smack dat 11-17-2017 04:36 PM

I seem to think just a few weeks ago that there was someone on GFY that had a script or a program that could locate lost keys.

There have been several online wallet providers that have been "hacked" (again, air quotes) and since they could not reimburse their customers they shut down. To be fair, some did make some attempts at paying the funds back, but the majority of them couldn't possibly recover from such a large theft... assuming it was even a theft by a third party. Some providers have dropped off the face of the earth without notice, disappearing with customer's funds, not even bothering with the pretense of being hacked.

A lot of Bitcoin services were/are provided by people who are smart programmers, but have little to no experience with financial services, or, more importantly, online security. An exchange or online wallet is going to be subject to constant intrusion attempts.

It is possible to find lost keys, even if the wallet has been deleted, but it can be a long shot. Still worth a try. I once recovered half a million keys from my NAS array (99.9% coincidentally had the same signature as a private key so were bogus) just to see if any still had value. :1orglaugh

WOW. I had no idea it worked like that. I though if you have your codes you are 100% secure. Turns out all bitcon are stored in some different companies that can simply take your money. Wow, how could anyone even trust that? I mean "hey, lets give my $100.000 to some online dude, lets hope he is not a shady person and won't run with 10.000.000 of customers' funds. :helpme:error

No, one of the core principles of Bitcoin is that you can store your wallet locally and do not rely on any third parties... BUT... for non technical people this can be a real headache. It's far easier to make an account on a website that offers an online wallet. For people playing with Bitcoin in the early days, storing a few bucks worth of value on a third party website probably didn't seem like a big risk, but then that value started going up...

Did occur to me that a good scam would be to play dumb about some Bitcoins you bought years ago, creating buzz about those 'lost' Bitcoins, then auction off your old hard drives because you have no idea how to recover them.

Not suggesting the OP is up to anything nefarious, just came to mind. But yeah, he does seem to be unusually casual about his lost millions. :1orglaugh

~Ray 11-20-2017 06:11 AM

Scan your harddrive for wallet.dat , then google the possible recovery methods

Search all your old computers / drives for a file wallet.dat <-- once you have it install the old bitcoin core software and open the wallet with your password that you commonly used at the time.

NickBaer 11-21-2017 12:21 PM

You could check you inbox, for email from a BitCoin Wallet host, that would have confirmed your details.
