buying exclusive content

just a quick question, how much should a webmaster usually expect to spend on exclusive content? I have seen figures on websites anywhere from $1-$3/image but in these forums I never see people post prices. When you are buying directly from a photographer such as through these forums, what is the average price?

thank you!
~katlyn~ :)

Joe_Blow 04-24-2003 07:56 PM

Here are our prices:

http://www.agencyglamour.com/custom.htm

Mutt 04-24-2003 08:11 PM

180-190 digital images exclusive use
(1600 x 1200) shot on a CD-R $175.00 + model?s rate
******************************************

what is the model's rate? how many wardrobe/background changes?

my price is $1.50-2.00 an image - depending on how many images per set the customer wants, set size seems to matter to some people. 5 custom exclusive sets, meaning each set is different wardrobe/different backdrop = $750, approx. 500 images.

Joe Blow, what is this 'exclusive use' thing? you retain rights to the images it sounds like.

Not with us, content is yours, other than a few samples I keep to show around, once the content is in your hands it gets deleted from our computers and discs. Gone. History.

UnseenWorld 04-24-2003 08:14 PM

Well, I think any photographer that sells his exclusive stuff for less than $2.50 or $3.00 a shot (depending on his quality) is giving it away, unless the deal is BIG VOLUME. I sell my nonexclusive stuff to most people at $1 a shot (which reminds me: this friggin war is over and I'd better close down the "Fuck CNN Sale" pretty soon).

kisskatlyn 04-24-2003 08:18 PM

thank you guys for your replies :)

AaronM 04-24-2003 08:21 PM

I get between $8 and $10 per pic.

Charge what you want. If people like your work then they will pay for it.

:2 cents:

Mutt 04-24-2003 08:25 PM

i agree Unseen that $1.50-2.00 isn't enough but it seems to be what the market will bear. If I sent out a letter saying $3.00 per image I'm pretty sure most wouldn't buy. People are not working with huge budgets for content.

Hell take a look inside most members areas, 95% don't have any exclusive content, just plugins and licensed content.

Which is why it makes sense to produce nonexclusive content and sell it over and over again. That way, a photo might be worth $10, $20, or more, not $1.25.

My bank account does not agree.

Notice all the content providers who are constantly updating their sites and spamming their new shit here because they are all starving? Notice I no longer spam here and that my site has not been updated for almost a year?

There is a reason for that.

With the quality of your work, you should not be cutting your legs off by selling for so little.

Content providers drove the prices down themselves...Not the webmasters. The money is still there, you just have to ask for it.

Mutt 04-24-2003 08:39 PM

the only way i could get $8-10 per pic is if it was a small number of photos, very custom - like somebody asked for 25 shots of a model in some kind of uniform or with some weird prop.

but those requests don't come that often.

fantasycontent 04-24-2003 08:42 PM

Our custom rates very depending on what you want shot...

Who sold you on that BS?

My exclusive sets are 45-55 images and I charge...and get $450.00 per set.

Unseenworld, Chrome, and myself had this same discussion at dinner one night. Unseen said the same thing he is saying now. I still stand by my own words.

I pay my bills, travel all over, have multiple investments, and still manage to eat too much. I must be doing something right.

Mutt 04-24-2003 08:44 PM

Aaron you are the captain of your own ship, u are selling your own work. My position is different than yours.

I was not aware of this.

MasterPhlomaster 04-24-2003 08:58 PM

Kudos for AaronM. I wish I could sell at $10 a pic.

In general price depends (at least for me) on a number of models present in the picture.

Currently my prices are - solo hardcore, with toys $1.5 per image, lesbi hardcore $2. This is full rights stuff.

I also licence images at $0.25 per pic.

Any takers?

most photographers are not Aaron. They don't want to be webmasters as well, i couldn't drag either of my guys onto this board or any board if i tried.

they know where their futures are and it ain't doing business this way.

kisskatlyn 04-24-2003 09:54 PM

so it seems that there really is quite a variety of prices isn't there? The reason I was asking isn't actually because I want to buy, it's because I am going to shoot a model myself for my own website. When I mentioned this to some webmasters they said that I could also post her picture before hand and see if anyone wanted exclusive sets, but I had no idea how much to charge if I were going to do that.

I really appreciate everyone's replies, it's given me lots to go on for determining how much my photography would be worth should I choose to do the custom shoots when I shoot her for my site! (still don't know if I want to go through that trouble or not)

Unseen does this girl look familiar? Just got her in my email box and she looks familiar. Has that 'Portland' look. Long legs, i think she's hot.

Totally agree. We can launch a set and sell it over it's lifetime 30 times. For solo at $35 that's $1050, for Boy-Girl at $45 each that is $1350, so why sell it for less? Extra work is the only reason, keep the wheels turning.

Aaron
I'm one of those that constantly spam our content and always updating our site. But then I run a slightly bigger operation than your normal shooter working from home on his own. Guess I need to stay on my toes. :)

kisskatlyn
The answer to your question is simple. You get what you pay for (Generally)

It depends on the quality/conversion/retention power of the content. There are Russians out there who will shoot a set for $80, but it's crap usually. People in the middle of the market who will shoot for $150 a set, but quality is not consistant and as Mutt say his people will not pay him more. Then people like us who will do this for $300 a set,

http://www.paulmarkham.com/sets/1313/cat.jpg

Then AMP who is charging $10 :thumbsup

The more you pay plus the better the work, the more likely your site is going to look a little different from the ones that are buying at the lower levels. Which is already way over crowded and competetive.

If you plan to shoot this girl yourself, then unless you know what you are doing you are going to be competing with every other person with a camera and a girl to pose naked. Again a very competetive arena.

Own a Ford and few notice you, own a Rolls and everyone notices you. Simple statement but one that is true.

Not from Portland, but I do know her. She's a model known as Jesmi or Lucy who I'm in e-mail contact with about doing a shoot sometime. She's hot, hot, hot, and you can see a lot of her (and I DO mean a lot) at CrazyBabe.com. She's an exceptionally creative model with lots of personality and I can hardly wait to get her in front of my own camera where we hope to do something a little bit punk-industrial-goth.

Her Yahoo! group is at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/seductivelymad/

Mutt 04-25-2003 12:03 AM

yeah she does look like an interesting model.

too bad, as discussed in this thread, at $1.50-2.00/pic, impossible to shoot a girl like this in some interesting locations which would work great with her.

You gave me lots of good info in your post, thank you a lot :) I want to shoot her myself for my own site so I'm not worrying too much about being competitive (I'm definately not a pro-photographer by any means) but people suggested I offer exclusive sets of her as well. I'm not sure I'm going to...seems like a bigger hassel than it's worth y'know? haha

But then again she does seem really excited to be doing the shoot and says she doesn't care if her photo is everywhere so maybe I will just post her photo when I go to shoot her incase someone wants some extra shots of her...that way if anyone wants them they can get them but at the same time I am not relying on selling extra shots of her.

thanks again Charly!

Just be sure you satisfy the record-keeping/ID requirements of Title 18 USC §2257. If you want to discuss how to get good photos without expending more money than you need to, or anything else, my ICQ is at 48201505.

Well, guess who else must be on a lot of boards to even realize that? :Graucho

PaulSweet 04-25-2003 10:44 AM

We charge around $10/pic for exclusive - depending on the details and quantity of what you want.

The people who work with us are happy to pay that as well - even though they know there are people who are cheaper.

I am on one other.

But between me and my significant other, we go to about 5.

Mutt 04-25-2003 10:51 AM

from Broadband Babes website:

When will I be paid?

You will be paid immediately following verification of a good shoot. Usually this is a short review of the stills/video and only takes a few minutes.

you get away with that?

AaronM 04-25-2003 10:53 AM

Katlyn...Do I know you?
