What makes a good domain name?

When buying new domains, what should I look for? I've been operating under a few assumptions, but now I'm not so sure. Any ideas?

Dazza 04-24-2003 03:46 PM

try WWW.SWOIT.COM, that might be free

hayesone 04-24-2003 03:50 PM

.com .org .net .biz etc.?

Do I need to worry 'bout hyphens?

How do the search engines look at domain names?

I've heard that for SE's hot-teens.com is better than hotteens.com
But I'd prefer to have hotteens.com for the type-in traffic :-)

Domain names mean nothing without good design, thoughtful planning, and well executed marketing. (Time and effort)

That's not correct.

hayesone 04-24-2003 03:58 PM

Well, of COURSE you need to actually DO something with the domain when you get it, but clearly yourreplywasfuckinguseless.com isn'st gonna be as good as teensex.com.

martzy 04-24-2003 04:00 PM

I hope I'm not stating the obvious when I say that you need a domain name that is easily remembered.

"Spotting a great domain name is like spotting a future star on America Idol. You just know it when you see it cause it has that magical "It" factor."

I agree, but what is 'easily remembered'?

The best job board is called monster.com.
The best portal is called yahoo.com.
The best book site is called amazon.com

These names have nothing to do with its purpose. Most sites with generic names failed. A name means very little without alot of sweat behind it. You are only going to get a few extra clicks if your site has the word teen or sex or anal in it. You aren't going to convert a client.

Search engines ploys, traffic buys, and all the other strategies are a simple beginning. What are you going to do to make money? Billions of dollars were spent buying traffic during the bubble. Who made money?

You would be surprised to how many idiots think all they need is a name and expect thousands for it with some out of the box script running it. Prioritize expectations.

Whatever you are targetting, the domain name should play the least role in your business plan. Unless, of course, you are simply looking for (mis)type-in traffic.

Say what???????? NOT!!!

The name is the focus, the brand you build, the ability for customers to remember you, the symbol of your biz.
