Librarians fend off grumbles over porn collection

A Romanian public library is buying porn magazines to meet public demand.

They can only be borrowed by adults and cannot be taken out of the reading room.

Monica Munteanu, who works at the County Library in Timisoara, defended the move and told the Evenimentul Zilei newspaper: "Because we had such a huge demand, the library decided to buy sex magazines.

"We have the Playboy collection but also magazines from the 30s, such as one called Body and Soul, which is similar to the erotic publications of today."

The director of the library, Paul Eugen Banciu, said the library agreed to buy the magazines even though it only had £1,500 to spend each year.

He said: "We generally we follow a serious direction in making new acquisitions but we want to keep people coming to the library."
