There is no simple answer to this, but still, there are some rules or things to expect. I will avoid writing about robots text and frequency of update (you can set that in sitemap.xml file for example).
The first important thing is how strong is the competition. For the "easy" keywords, you can be ranked in a few days while for those that are more "hard" it can take up to 2 months (this is the longest period regarding my experience). Also, there is a difference from the perspective of the search engine. It is easier to rank in Yahoo and Bing than in Google.I've also noticed that for some keywords that are ranked great in Bing and Yahoo, immediately go down when that keyword finally get a good position in Google :1orglaugh
Assuming that you picked a target keyword properly (something you can achieve after analysis of current site strength and state of competition) you should expect big fluctuations before a keyword is where you wanted to be (near the top of SERP). Once it is stabilized, you should go with relevant niche links pointing to that page to ensure or improve the position. It is normal that a keyword drops out of SERP completely during the process.
Below is the perfect example for a targeted keyword. As you can see, the page was created on the 12th July. You can see the behavior and fluctuations on the print screen below. It was August 26th when it finally started to stabilize.
