A white supremacist wanted on three felony charges connected to the rallies in Charlottesville, Va., has turned himself in.
Chris Cantwell is being held in Blue Ridge Regional Jail after surrendering to the Lynchburg Police on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Daily Progress.
The far-right blogger was arrested on two counts of illegal use of tear gas and one count of malicious bodily injuries.
Cantwell was prominently featured in a Vice News documentary about the white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and other far-right groups gathered in Charlottesville on Aug. 12.
He acknowledged pepper-spraying a counter-protester but insisted he was defending himself, saying he did it ?because my only other option was knocking out his teeth?.
In the video, he spoke about his desire to create a white ?ethno-state?, flaunted his numerous firearms, and said, ?I?m trying to make myself more capable of violence.?
His downfall, however, was swift after the rallies erupted in violence and James Alex Fields Jr., allegedly slammed his car into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing 32-year-old paralegal Heather Heyer.
Cantwell, who was blocked from Facebook and OkCupid, also filmed himself crying after he realized police had issued a warrant for his arrest. |
