Russia Bans VPN's Today, China Banned them earlier this month so...

... is this why GFY traffic has slowed? :1orglaugh J/K the VPN ban starts November 1st. As if VPN is the only way :1orglaugh

I doubt this will change anything in Russia because there's no enforcement of anything, China, I think, is a different story. Your thoughts?

Russia bans VPNs to stop users from looking at censored sites - Jul. 31, 2017

Russia is cracking down on software that allows users to view internet sites banned by the government.

President Vladimir Putin has signed a bill that prohibits services, including virtual private networks (VPNs), that enable users to skirt government censorship efforts.
The law will take effect on November 1.

VPNs use encryption to disguise the source of internet traffic, allowing users to view websites that are banned in their home countries. Many popular VPN services cost around $10 a month.

Russian internet regulator Roskomnadzor maintains a blacklist of thousands of websites.

"My colleagues only included the restriction of access to information that is already forbidden by law or a court decision," he told state news agency RIA Novosti earlier this month.

Amnesty International criticized the law as the "latest blow in an assault on online freedom."

"With the Russian authorities increasingly intolerant of dissent, technologies that help internet users evade censorship and protect their privacy are crucial for freedom of expression online," said Denis Krivosheev, deputy director for Europe and Central Asia at Amnesty International.

Russia is not the only country to crack down on VPNs.

China said in January it would begin to restrict VPNs, and this month reportedly told the country's three big telecom companies to block individuals' access to them by early next year.

On Saturday, two VPN providers with operations in the country said they had been notified by Apple that their products were being removed from the company's app store in China because they contained illegal content.

China's internet regulator has defended the crackdown, saying recent measures were part of an ongoing campaign aimed at "cleaning and standardizing" access to the internet.

My thoughts are that the EU wil say it is against freedom.
And than they will introduce it themselves in 1 - 5 years saying it is for stopping fake news.

just like there was much rumour when the world saw how the USA is spying on ministers etcetra.
But now countries like Holland use the same tools to collect all data from all persons and spy on everyone.
Therefor VPN will also become popular in EU countries, and than the government / EU will stop that by making VPN illegal.

Interesting times ahead. I think you're right.

So many massive VPN's in America help so much theft by Russia, China, etc. and thieves/governments always find a way so fucking America will continue by Russia, China, etc.

Question is how they do it - if they will ban based on website/app name, then it will never really work. Even if they somehow manage to ban all known VPN services, you can make your own VPN by simply connecting to VPS or Dedicated Server.

Man, you don't understand what are you talking about. Don't try to take Putin as a normal and a sane person who understands at least basics of the information technologies. The guy still reads the internet on paper. I'm not kidding and Putin really asks his secretary to print the Internet articles every time he wants to read them, because he can't interact with a computer...

Putin is scared as fuck of power and someone just told him that he can spy on everyone in the Internet if VPN will be "banned". Course nothing will be done (as usually), but that smart-ass "someone" will put milliards of dollars into his own pocket, because Putin will pay it. I don't know if you heard about that, but yet a year ago Putin has decided that he wants to copy the whole Internet to a magnet disk. Check this out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yarovaya_law - the cowardly old man really thinks that is possible, because he was told that by someone "who knows it and can do it" :1orglaugh

Lol, i just saying how banning all VPN it's not something what can be done easily. And yes i do know he is scared as fuck, i watched years ago documentary about "nasi" which was formed due him being scared how protests from Ukraine could move to Russia.

And speaking about "printing" internet, that remind when i send a complaint e-mail anonymously to college administration , but they figured out somehow it's me sending it, so when i went there to do something they wawed with printed e-mail to me.
