Somebody Did Something Really Dumb and it Hurts!

Many of you don't know, but while I have a huge number of photos for sale, I'm still a 1-1/4 person (with a part-timer) operation. My "ride" is a bicycle. I live in a 1-bedroom apartment where the bedroom is an office, and while my gross might impress some, my net is well down in the 5 figures paying models, renting locations, buying photo equipment, and so on, gets expensive, plus money I make pretty much gets plowed back into the business right away.

So, when somebody downloads a shitload of photos and pays for it with a charge card, and then 6 weeks later I get a chargeback notice saying the owner of the card made no such purchase (around $2400), it really hurts. I just don't keep that kind of money laying around in my account.

Now, someone downloaded a shitload of sets, gave me someone else's card number, and doesn't dare send in the license. I just wonder what in the world they would hope to accomplish by doing that...probably use it to screw some third party.

It is not going to be easy to deal with this kind of hit. I'm going to be using every resource available to discover who did it (records of IP numbers if they're available), but I may just be stuck with this bill. After 6 weeks, the money has been spent.

I'm just depressing how thoughtless some people can be.

This will probably mean I will have to get all kinds of confirming documentary evidence before putting large sales with new customers through in the future.

Sorry to hear that. Fraud is such a shame, where did all the honesty go. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to figure out who did it, tracing IPs... or in the best case you'll find your content in someone's tour who didn't license it.

Good luck.:thumbsup

Stallion 04-21-2003 02:05 PM

Damn sorry to hear that. Unfortunately it just goes to show you that some people in this business will do anything they can to scam others. I hope you find out exactly who did this and make them pay what they are entitled to.

Sassyass 04-21-2003 02:39 PM

No honor.
I'm sorry that happened to you.

Jail time?

Fraud is fraud.

Jakke PNG 04-21-2003 02:41 PM

I fucking hate thieves with passion.
Especially if they steal from me. But I'm sorry to hear that, hope ya get it sorted

kenny 04-21-2003 02:43 PM

Sorry to here that happen bro, I hope that asshole gets what he deserves. Who was it if I may ask?

Did you catch the part about using another persons card?

kacy 04-21-2003 02:53 PM

That sucks :( Sorry to hear that. Let me know if you need help tracking down the ip for the downsloads to try and match it up to the location of the cc holder. It might help you out in fighting the charge back. How long ago was the download? Like 6 weeks ago? Well send me whatever info you have and we'll see what we can track down for ya.

Keep your chin up :)

Lily 04-21-2003 02:54 PM

God that SUCKS. I've never had a chargeback that big. This last week a guy's mom found out he had a little "habit" and forced him to dispute well over $5,000 in PayPal payments made to a bunch of phone sex companies.

I got hit for about $1500, I think I took the worst of it.

It's a horrible, horrible thing and I hope someone figures out how to stop this kind of thing soon. I'm starting to think bar codes, finger printing or retinal scans tied to your bank account aren't a bad thing.

I think a lot of webmasters manipulate the system and play the "fool the credit card" company game....

I also think the CC companies are so busy spamming high interest, high risk cards to everyone, the sheer amount of fraud has increased by a huge amount.

AOLGuy 04-21-2003 03:22 PM

Man, that's fucked up.

If you want to boost your monthly though, re-read that AVS deal proposal I sent you a few months back!

gothweb 04-21-2003 04:42 PM

That just isn't right. I'm sorry to hear that.

Why 04-21-2003 04:45 PM

dont call the authorites, get a really sharp knife,a nd apply light pressure with it to the base of the scrotum. and pull. :) or push... depending on angle. but you get the picture. :)

quiet 04-21-2003 04:47 PM

But that's true in anything. Most are just looking for quick money and don't care about it being a business.

Why is it that most treat the adult porn business as a hobby?
Get in and get out with what ever you can still, sad.

It just totally screws up those that are honest and running things as a business.

Tukhman 04-21-2003 05:27 PM

Sorry to hear that. Best thing to do in these cases is to always require additional information, such as the authorization form, forms of ID, etc... specifically on bigger purchases.

jim manly 04-21-2003 05:27 PM

Damn thats not cool :(

Just last week someone stole my debit card number and made purchases over the internet. Luckily I noticed it quick and deactivated my card, only $300. Still it sucks. Fucking scammers :BangBang:

Thats arguable.

beemk 04-21-2003 05:45 PM

how could they be that stupid? if they wanted the unlicensed sets that bad why would they do credit card fraud? they could have much easier just copied the pics off some site.

UnseenWorld 04-21-2003 05:50 PM

Check this out... Whoever did this sure looked like they were financing their way into the adult biz with someone else's card. This is the "victim's" statement (identifying info obliterated) and I see a number of adult-oriented businesses here. Also, I see a second chargeback on the way in the statement, too, so I think we're up to somewhere around $3500 now that I may have to find some way to pay back. Here's his statement. I assume the circled transactions are ones the cardholder is disputing. Anybody seriously know how to fight this sort of thing (my business is "Afterglow Marketing")?

City Guide ISP i think is Candid Hosting? Looks like a 300 dollar charge to them, a hosting account. Maybe they can give you some info.

Some charges are for paysite memberships.

Then there's one that looks like another big charge to another content provider - X41 Productions of Arizona. Anybody know who that is?

Unseen, when u sell licensed content don't you make them fill out a form where they have to give you domain names where you can check out that the customer's name or email matched the WHOIS registrant's information?

You could still of course get ripped off but this would be a good policy.

Up till now, that has been done in the licensing stage. I think in the future, for sales over say, $200 from an unfamiliar customer, I'll be getting callback info and checking WHOIS and stuff.

Yes Cityguide is Candid. Hopefully they can help. Dunno.

UnseenWorld 04-21-2003 10:02 PM

Well, I found the original orders and they came in about an hour apart from two different IP #'s. Here's the info I was able to obtain using an IP address tracker:

looking up 217.144.0.133
Failed to resolve address 217.144.0.133

looking up 195.66.208.29
Official name: sentry-real.ilyichevsk.net

One failed to resolve and the other seems to be a Ukrainian ISP. Any ideas what to do next?

psyko514 04-21-2003 10:06 PM

how'd you get the statement?

LadyMischief 04-21-2003 10:19 PM

Ugh.. it couldn't have happened to someone who deserved the bullshit less. I am really sorry that happened to you, Unseen. I hope they catch this asshole and send him straight to his "love shack" with Bubba. Man that's unreal.. I will say one thing thing, this is a thief with taste in content! :thumbsup Not that that helps you, but hopefully that brings a smile. Keep us informed, eh?

fantasycontent 04-21-2003 10:27 PM

Shit man with that info you could have gotten more info about them, and submited them to a collection agency. But if they're really in Ukraine you're fucked. There is nothing you can do here. Do some more digging and double check if he's really from Ukraine. Thats about all you can do.

RaiDeN 04-22-2003 03:21 AM
