Toronto Webmaster summit - the good the bad and the ugly

well it's over.

As I sit here in my hotel I want to say thank you to those people who made the best of the situation and made this a decent weekend.

Thank you Python for all your efforts. Elvis Manson rocked.

FUBAR (JFK) was out in force - thank you for the great dinner.

Spread 4 u pretty much MADE the conention with their suit parties. Thank you guys. Without you guys there wouldn't have been a decent party.
Too bad the hotel had to shut them both down. I would NOT recomend the delta for a convention.

I kept waiting for the topic on spam at the seminars but it never came up?

Dinner tonight was awesome - burgers hit the spot. Thanks!

as for the bad and the ugly - I'll leave that for others to post about.

Dugmor 04-20-2003 08:28 PM

Great meeting up with you agian Sleazy !

I have to also thank Spread 4 U ( Barry ) for the dinner Satuday night !

I did'nt get invlited to the Elite BBQ at FUBAR .... I guess I am not elite anymore ......:)

psyko514 04-20-2003 08:40 PM

oscer 04-20-2003 08:41 PM

man they shut the parties down after they were paid all that money from the convention ..... thats fucked up man ....

I wish i would have made it .... But i have to get some car shit fixed didnt think it would be wise to drive with a bubble in my tire and i was just really lazy this weekend

Manga1 04-20-2003 09:08 PM

Yea the seminars were dissapointing. I made it down Saturday afternoon just for the spam and the legal seminars but they didn't happen. Bummer. Either way it was cool meeting some of the people I talk with on icq.

Yeah, I showed up at 1:15 on Saturday (after the lunch break). People didn't trickle in until 2, and at around 2:30, there was a 20 min discussion about "working the messageboards". I left after that.

Much thanks BarryF, the Heavenly Haze, and Gunner for organizing such a fantastic opening night and for the wonderful dinner on Saturday night. Thanks to Orgasm.com for our Saturday night, to LoveSexxxy for their after-hours suite party, and to Python for thier continuous support of industry events. And, of course, big thank yous to JFK for continuing to chronicle our wacky lives....

Great meeting some new faces. SleazyDream...was a pleasure to finally meet you and get the chance to chat a bit. Night all...

The 100% reason I did not go to Toronto was that it was at the Delta...

I stayed in toronto for 5 days in febuary. Stayed at the delta hearing that it was a top notch hotel...I was dead wrong, I had better stays at model 6!!!!!!

Service Sucked...They lost my registration....They TRIPPLE billed my credit card, they also pre-auth'd my CC for 1000$ on check in but did not use that pre-auth to close the account. It took me 6 weeks to get them to send something to my bank so they could release the funds.

The did not tell me about the 25$ a day parking fee...
All in all they sucked.....

The Delta is a NIGHTMEAR come true.

I phone the delta - they confirm - YES they have high speed access in the rooms. Ok - I say I want the best room I can get - so they set me up with a signature suit over the phone. -Simple enough right. - they tell me this is the best they have ,25th floor and it sounds good on the phone.

ok, my plane lands from winnipeg and right beside us a plane from asia unloads - everyone has a face mask on. I'm freaking.
Ok - I get my ass down to the hotel and book my room. They tell me they have dialup access - not highspeed. FUCK - ok, I'm pissed. I get into my room and a MOTEL 6 would be a bigger room. There isn't even a couch - one fucking chair and a bed - the table is actually SMALLER than a SMALL nightstand - in fact the nightstands in the room are in fact bigger. IMPOSSIBLE to bring clients back to my room for anything other than sex.

Ok, so I get up to the room and the FIRST and ONLY thing I want to do is have a shower. I strip own and turn on the water. NO WATER. I phone the front desk and the lady tells me they turn off the water every night from 1am till 5am.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Ok, they told me they had mini bars in the room over the phone, and this is true - but they arn't stocking them anymore and they don't hand out keys. I'm starving since I havn't had dinner - ok - no problem, I'll call room service.
A hotel with HUNDREDS of rooms like this one (27 stories) SHOULD have room service right? - CLOSED at 11pm.

then, later at a party I end up in a suite that actually is a suite - WHY THE FUCK didn't they tell me that these existed when I booked my god damn fucking room. The suite was nice - exactly what I wanted.

This was a poor start for a toronto convention. The Delta is TOTALLY the wrong hotel to do this. Booking an INTERNET convention at a hotel WITHOUT high speed access is an example of SHEAR UTTER STUPIDITY.

Easter is the WRONG time to do this. That was a BIG mistake from someone rather STUPID who chose this weekend for this event. COMPLETE disrespect for those of us who came out and had to miss being with our families on this holiday.

Cancelling the paintball without telling anyone REALLY pissed me off - it was the reason I got on the plane to come here. One of the organizers (we're not going to mention names here again)didn't even BOTHER to wake up and attend the seminars on Sat morning. I was told I had to speak at 11am, - I had a wake up call scheduled for 10:30 so I'd be on time. - Guess what - my time was pushed forward to 10am and no one told me. I ended up comming down at 10:30(cause someone was nice enough to call me in my room) - 1/2 hour late to a bunch of people wondering why I kept them waiting so long. I was QUITE pissed about that - i don't like to be late or be sceen as being late.
The next day they didn't even cover the topics they were supposed to cover. Those that did speak did do a good job but it was all cut soo short everyone left with the feeling that they missed something.

I met some good people here and if toronto ever has another convention I hope the particular person (you all probally know who I'm talking about) who FUCKED it all up isn't involved in it. If he is I won't come back.

LadyMischief 04-20-2003 11:00 PM

Man, I'm sorry I missed meeting everyone, but it seems I didn't miss as much as I thought I did. Ahh well.. sorry to hear you didn't have the greatest time, Sleazy. Hope everything goes a bit better for you :)

MmMM I love Lake Louise.. what Suite are you in? I know some of the suites there can easily run $1500 a night. I have some amazing pictures from all around there.. If you have a vehicle available, take a trip up to Lake Morraine. AMAZING sight (personally I like it better than Lake Louise). The road should be open this time of year. We're hoping to rent a cabin up there this summer.

just a basic suite. living area, bed area, etc. i've stayed here many times before (at least a dozen) - once in a two level suite (i can dig up a pic i'm sure). i lived/had my office in Banff from 2000 - 2002, and have been a hard core snowboarder since i was 16 (Louise is my favorite place to ride in Alberta), so i know the area quite well.

that's what i'm doing here right now. snowboarding and hiking...

that's absurd... the water gets turned off at night?
you should have stayed at the Marriott (where I stayed)
Two blocks away from the Delta and a lot cheaper. Room service was only until 11 but the water was on all night. They also offered high-speed access and the rooms were a nice size.

Even better is the Novotel, but I don't think they have high speed.

One thing I did like about the Delta was their waterslide.

Their staff was snotty though... I'm a 20 year old kid, and when I walked up to the front desk to ask where the convention was, I got a very snotty look, I was looked up and down, and then given brief, mumbled directions.

That has to be illegal or against some kind of sanitary code. I can't believe they do that and that you had to go through that.

I would have gone absolutely mental on the management and demanded a refund.

get this - at the delta lounge after making a POINT to fucking go back and cover other people's Tabs( I had already paid mine and bought a couple of rounds with cash) so the waitress wouldn't get stuck with it - the next day she wouldn't serve me. God I love the fucking Delta.

this morning I order room service - I SPECIFICALLY ask for extra ketchep for my corned beef hash - I ask for 3 ketchups- TWO times on the phone. I was lucky to get one and when I asked for more the fucking bell boy told me I SHOULD have REQUESTED that when I ordered. I almost punched him.

I bitched to high hell with there managment, I was litterly screaming on the phone with him. It did no good.

No roomservice but Pizza Pizza hit the spot when we where to drunk to head out...

Lucky for you you didn't have to sit through the seminar explaining what a sponsor and affiliate program is LOL

Another stupid thing at the Delta is these guys don't even think to put the show down as the Webmaster Summit or webmaster whatever. I spent half an hour at the concierge trying to figure out where the seminars were. I kept telling the guy it's the webmaster summit and he couldn't find anything. I ask if there's anything to do with webmaster, or internet, or world wide web, or online, or porn, etc.... nothing. Finally we figure out it's the seminar registered under CanAm Productions :helpme

cyberpunk 04-21-2003 08:43 AM

Morning all,

I'd like to start by saying this isn;t my offical after the show post, will do that laster today on a few more hours sleep first :)

Thanks to everyone that came out, thanks to the sponsors, Python, Spread4U, orgasmcash, you guys all rock! Thanks to the seminar speakers.

Now to cover over some of bad quickly, and yes like I said I'll write somethign better this afternoon, but wanted to let u all know that the issues are not being glossed over. On the same note, I do think the show went pretty well. Lots of people made alot of connectoins and that is IMO the main reasons for these events.

So, first and foremost, the Delta, I'm not going to go into all the details, but most have been covered off here, we WILL NOT be using the Delta for this next year. By the time it was realzied how fucked up they where, it was too late, I worked hard, to fix problems with them as the arose, but it seemed that every problem I fixed, 2 more came up with them.

The seminars, there where some, we'll call them scheduling issues, on this I'll make 2 quick points. I really want to thank the people that did speak, I think you guys did a great job, and I'll buy eat of your dinner and/ or a beer at the next show I see each of you at., and secondly I'll be persoanlly over seeing this part ofo the show next year, so there will be no fuck ups.

While this is much longer then I planed on, casue I'm still pretty fuckin tired. I think all in all it was a good show. We had great people and great sponsors. Like anything in this business or any business, I'll take the next few weeks to over in detail what went right and wrong, and start the battle plan for next year. There will be many changes, most of you might not notice them other then that things will be alot smoother, but I can tell you that changes will be there, (makign my life easier) and our next Webmastersummit, will be even move over the top then this one!

Thanks!

I had the same argument with the dumb guy at the concierge... he looked at me as if I was making up stories. He took me over to this board and said: "There are three conventions listed here do you see one that is about Webmasters because I don't?"

It took me about 10 minutes just to convince him to tell me where the seminar rooms were so I could look into it for myself!!!
