How can micro SD card be "locked" ? Why do micro SD cards crap out so often?

I don't get it, 3 cards in 2 weeks. This one says "locked" and I cant delete or add anything to it. 32gig Lexar not some knockoff.
Any idea how to "unlock" it?

InfoGuy 06-22-2017 02:59 PM

There may be a sliding tab on the side of the card like the larger sized standard SD cards.

Sometimes, I have had USB 2.0 media become no longer writable. You cannot even format them and the slider is not locked.

Have you tried to access your card from different devices? I have the same problem on some computers, but when I use the disk on another machine everything works fine. Some disks I can not format on a computer, but formatting works fine inside a camera.

I guess there might be hidden files that need to be churned. Maybe formatting on Linux level would help, but I haven't digged that deep.

Good luck.

I'm sure I read somewhere that you could 'lock' your micro sd card via the phone (if you are using it in a phone) so that if the card gets lost stolen, others cannot read your data...

Could it have been 'locked' in a previous device or is it a brand new card?

freecartoonporn 06-23-2017 05:10 AM

try inserting your card in different machines or if you are using card reader then try another one.

last bet would be insert that card in linux runnig machine and do format. if it detects it.

Barry-xlovecam 06-23-2017 05:50 AM

LINUX formatting doesn't work (cure the problem).
Android cannot read LINUX ex4 or ex3 nor USB 3.0
I format in LINUX FAT32 for all Android storage.
Sometimes storage media can/has to be formatted by the device (phone or tablet) to be writable.

Every micro SD has to be formatted first to work -- every one I have gotten is not formatted

Interrupting the writing function to an SD card (and presumably Micro SD) may also cause it to lock up. So, if your card is plugged into a slot, a USB stick or other adapter and you remove it while it is being written to, there's a good chance you'll have a problem. With Windows, there's an icon on the bottom right of your toolbar to eject a device and after doing so, Windows will tell you it is safe to remove it.

They became cheaper and so does its quality.

Rochard 06-23-2017 10:43 AM

I've never had a problem with an SD card. Ever.

Same here. Never. The OP doesn't want to admit I'm right so he's keeping the thread going as if there's some unknown issue SD card that he's afflicted with :1orglaugh If you're dumb enough to think you're superior based on race, you're dumb enough not to know your SD card adapter has a slide lock, and dumb enough not to admit when you're wrong :2 cents:

I am not sure if all of you trolling op or really are grade A idiots.
This is micro SD card. Small card used in cell phones and 10 inch laptops as additional drive.

This is SD card used in cameras and such.

This is micro SD adapter. You use it to put your micro SD in to transfer your phone data to computer and other devices that have SD slot. or use micro SD card in cameras that require SD cards.

If stand alone micro SD card says its locked, its simply went to shit. There is nothing one can do.
No matter which device you try to format it with, it will say it is locked - non-writable. Buy new one.

It shouldn't surprise us here.. :2 cents:

I can't explain why but I've always had great luck with cards - SD in cameras or camcorders- or Micro-SD for phones (Nexus 5 or 6) when I used the official SD card formatting program.

https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/

Recently a friend was having issues getting his Windows 7 machine to read cards from his Canon 5D. Next shoot he formatted all cards with that tiny program and the issues went away.
