Pre-Pay a NEW Designer? S.O.P.?
 

i have a designer with an impressive portfolio that i want to do some work for me, he is new to the adult biz, so he doesnt know who I am, I even took the time to give him references of the top guys in the biz and he tells me he can't do it unless I pre-pay....

Am I crazy for thinking he's crazy? He's a newb who nobody knows, and I'm supposed to prepay him? It's only a $225 job, but hey....

If he's really good, for $225.. take the chance.

im sure many good designers here would do work for you without you having to prepay!

hmm, i've worked with Quashe, Hungryman, dg-designs, marian@madthumbs, freelancers, and i have never been asked for prepayment.... i am offended.... am i wrong to be offended?

do a 50/50 or demand to see alittle progress to make sure he really is a designer instead of some shithead using others sites in his folio.

Prepay 100%? No. I'd offer to pay half and then the other half on delivery of a final approved product.

Don't be offended; he doesn't know you, you don't know him, why should either one of you feel you're taking a risk? Give him a deposit on the work and you'll both feel better.

I think your wrong to be offended, i usally take cash upfront, at my first go on design 3 years ago i got fucked over 5 times or something in a week (was building my folio).

I agree 50% upfront sound right if they dont like it try someone else

I would go with someone else. He is just taking liberties. He can set it up so you can view the final product but not get it till payment. Where as you have no real come back if you pay him up front and he doesn't deliver.

if youre the one asking him for work hes the one callin the shots. Youre looking at his work, and chose him, just pay the guy. You came to HIM for work based on his TALENT, if you value that talent, just pay the guy.

Id say he's playing the game smart. Give him a break, he doesnt know you or your rep, or the people you sent him to, think about it, you sent him to a bunch of adult references, that doesnt mean shit to him, he doesnt have any idea who or what they are worth.

I am currently working things out with the involved parties/clients. It was never my intent to 'run away' with their deposits or leave the work incomplete.

it's a common usage in non-adult design to charge 50/50 or 33/33/33 (pre-on sight-on delivery), and really good designers usually ask 100% upfront. Anyway, I don't see where's the problem since you can chargeback what you paid. I'm sure there's not a single designer here that didn't get screwed doing jobs and not being paid. So the only one taking risks here is the designer, therefore, what's the problem in paying upfront, specially for something that you know is good? Is not like you won't pay for it, and I don't know what work do you need, but for 225 bucks... man, when I need something well done, I don't even blink to invest such a little amount, leave it for crappy designers asking thousands of dollars! :glugglug

I never take a new client with out 50% down. I do not care who you are. I have had a Chamber of commerce rip me off and someone I thought I was a friend. Unless we have done business in the past... forget it.

I would rather not have the job rather than do all the work and not get paid.
