Where did all the top lists go?

I seem to remember there being 100's of toplists with their top spots recieving in the 1000's. Nowadays, I can't find any top lists that are worth a shit that don't promote illegal junk. Where did they all go? What happened to teentop and Cliff's Erotica?

You can thank all the cheaters for severly damaging the toplist industry. Shame, too. They were real good to use.

I started one a while back but never really promoted it. I guess once I get some signups I will throw some traffic at it.

I know tops still convert because mine makes sales but the ratio has dropped a lot over the years.

I'm moving to an all reviewed list soon. No more open signup. I'll still rank, but traffic volume and "click productivity" will not be primary ranking criteria.

"click productivity." Heh.

I fucking hate this, btw. The cheaters took a totally automated money maker and turned it into a millstone that I gotta push every fucking day.

But, the bright side is that back in the days any idiot could run a toplist, so there were too many of them. Today the only tops left are the ones who understood cheaters early on and did something about them. Even they will disappear, I predict, as the bots get smarter.

Manually ranked list links are even harder to manage but the traffic is best. That means even less competition because the NWS (newbies with script) can't compete with you.

Here's two of my toplists that work fine... and no illegal links -- (if you find any let me know)

When I started out I only had my link on a few top list and I was doing as good as if I had my link on 100's of sites.

Top list have been good to me! :thumbsup

The top list on my sign is doing pretty good to - not that it will send you 1000's of hits but the quality is damn good!

I have to keep reminding myself that it's not the amount of hits I get but the quality that matters.

Amen on this! Every toplist I know of has gone under becasue of fucking cheaters. It's a shame to see that happen!:(

really nothing can be done about cheaters on toplists?
since there's some hitbot traffic on TGP's ( at least everybody says it here, I don't run any TGP's or toplists ) but there are thousands of TGP's, so why hitbot traffic and cheaters on toplist in generall, can't be eliminated ?

HairToStay 04-17-2003 03:58 PM

I just put up hairytoplist.com for hairy woman sites but haven't had time to promote it yet.

I will manually approve each link and check them each day to keep them clean. It's work but it's worth it

I notice lately most TGP links I click on that promise one type of content take me to a site completely at the other end of the spectrum.

The bots start out on toplists because that's the whole purpose: to run up rank. (Or to run up PPC payments, but mostly those have gone under for same reason tops are in trouble.) The bots are on TGPs for no particular reason, they're just doing their crawling thing, trying to look like a real surfer. Part of looking like a real surfer is clicking on links. there's no incentive to make the spider smart enough to know when to stop, so they go on and on and on like the energizer bunny.

You can eliminate them using many different techniques, but most techniques are not perfect and you'll delete some honest sites. I've looked at IP distribution, % of AOL surfers in the traffic, and others. Nothing works well, they just set up their damn bots on AOL.
