Before I purchase a new portable 1tb HDD... (No Poo - Honest)
 

Is there a particular make I should either look for, or avoid?

I've had a 1TB WD 'Passport' running my time machine backups for about 8 years, but during the night, it shit the bed (pun intended) so needs replacing...

Get another the same, or in the last 8 years have things moved on and theres a 'new kid on the block' I should be looking at?

get "wd my cloud".
it comes with app for windows idk about apple though.

it stores automatic backups in the WD my cloud.

i dont use that sw, as i use my cloud for foscam video recordings .

it comes with WD RED HDD
it has gigabit port, so faster data transfer.
it has usb3

cons:
its not that protable like wd passport.

Thanks guys - WD is is then :) I've just gone for a simple "WD 1 TB Elements Portable External Hard Drive, USB 3.0" £49.00 with Next Day Delivery

After all, it just sits behind the mac for TM backups, doesn't get moved etc.. TBH I have never used the last one ever, but if I dont replace it... I'll need it lol

I have one of those (still working after about 5-6 years), but now use seagate 2Tb portables (samsung ones I was using got discontinued)

Do you have a PS4? Buy a 1 or 2TB Seagate Expansion, remove it from the casing and swap it with the one in the PS4 and ta-da you have a pimped PS4 and a 500gb external drive :) That's what I did.

I accidentally dropped it onto a tile floor from about 7-8 feet while hooking it up to my router. It is still working, so there is that. :)
