offering dvds

if you have original vids is it worth it to offer them for sale..dvd..vhs...i know there are laws in different hillbilly states that can get you in trouble shipping to
them..anyone know about this stuff?

RedShoe 04-15-2003 05:23 PM

The "I didn't know it was illegal" defense still holds up in some of those states.

I sell DVD's, there arent too many laws.

#1 dont sell to minors, ever!

#2 your movies must be licensed originals, bought from manufacturer, studio, or a licensed reseller.

#3 when shipping over seas and expecting a problem going through customs, always attach a note saying "happy birthday bud, sorry for delay ... hope you like these." or else he has to pay tax on them (heavy tax too!)

like more info?

Hey why? Ive always used USPS since they have the cheapest rates on small packages.

Costs like $1.66 to ship a single movie:2 cents:

Because if you ship items that a state or local law enforcement agency deems "obscene" you can be prosecuted for it. Basically, for using the Postal Service to transport obscene items. If you use FedEx or another commerical courier, they can't say jack.

I think I'm right about this. I may be talking out of my ass, but I'm too lazy to look it up.

I've shipped a ton of dvds all over the world and never had a problem.

A couple of times, shipments to Canada and the U.K were seized.

Shipped them again, problem solved. :Graucho

In theory, you are not supposed to ship to a number of zip codes, but in practice everybody does. Its not clear that those laws would stand up in court or exactly how some clown junior DA in Utah is going to come get me, anyway.

You are right and my lawyer had told me. Also keeping up with currents events the two adult companies busted recently were busted for using the US mail.

Why not just sell the DVD distribution rights for your videos to an existing company in that side of the industry?

Morphius 04-15-2003 09:52 PM

Watch out man...tough laws out there and you better know them.
