Not quite. They got funded. Got big in Southeast Asia. Then they folded.

true , friendster owned the Philippines market and hi5 owned thai markets... now look at them both... ouch

Definitely one of the precursors to today's social networks. Classmates.com is Aldo another site that predates the MySpace/Facebook era. They have not folded but could have been much larger has they adapted.

I seem to recall a story about how the owner of Friendster had all of these big ideas, but his investors wouldn't allow any of it.

Their ads were all over the place. Prior to FB, people would actually PAY to catch up with old friends using a platform like classmates.

Orkut was huge in India and Brazil. Google did not see a future for it hahaaha.

I remember everytime when there was discussion about social networks, orkut was mention and how it big in Brazil . I guess brazil is not profitable market eh?
