That is actually first social network, but they didnt bother much to update which resulted in failure, same as with myspace.

Definitely one of the precursors to today's social networks. Classmates.com is Aldo another site that predates the MySpace/Facebook era. They have not folded but could have been much larger has they adapted.

I seem to recall a story about how the owner of Friendster had all of these big ideas, but his investors wouldn't allow any of it.

Their ads were all over the place. Prior to FB, people would actually PAY to catch up with old friends using a platform like classmates.

I remember everytime when there was discussion about social networks, orkut was mention and how it big in Brazil . I guess brazil is not profitable market eh?
