What were you in High School?

So what were you like in High School? I was the freaky long-haired rocker type...

StupidNewbie 04-12-2003 08:55 PM

I don't see drug addict on there..

bhutocracy 04-12-2003 08:56 PM

If hollywood teen movies have taught me anything, it's that all people fit into highly defined categories.

haha, you're right, I forgot to give stoner a seperate category, but for the purposes of this poll you can substitute thug, freak or rocker. :thumbsup

What do you mean? There's people who don't fit stereotypes? I don't know about you but I see the world through "Breakfast Club" colored glasses. :winkwink: Actually, in high school, I think most people ARE stereotypes. You don't develop a real personality until you're in your 20's.

yea, that was mainly for the female quotient (or the gays). The gossipy social butterfly or Miss/Mr. Popular types.

Exxxotica 04-12-2003 09:01 PM

Where's the bully option? I used to love to dump smaller kids in the trash. Tapped one kid to a flagpole with duct tape.

And who could forget wegies!!! Yankin some kids underwear up his ass till they ripped LOL

Highschool was good times!

I guess you don't do marketing in this industry. Tanker is the king of all Social Butterflies.

I was invisible, until I set up a fake gun shot effect for our talent show. At that time kids weren't shooting up schools, so it was ok. The school paniced and kicked me right the fuck out, just an hour after it happened. 1 year later, I landed my first FX job.

It's fun but It's hype. At least it is here. All schoolkids have to wear uniforms here so visually there aren't any leather jacket wearing rebels or prada wearing bitch-queens. In practice I don't recall many stereotypical groups. The "jocks" which I suppose are the people that were on the football team were the same people who surfed and took mushrooms. The geeks took drugs and played sport. different people rocked. There were distinct groups of friends but everyone got along. Yes there was a "cool good looking guy" he was an intelligent high-grade-getting vegetarian surfer drug-taking musician footballer. We don't have cheerleaders here. I never, ever, saw a "jock" picking on a "geek". Ever. The "stoners" (and by stoners I mean the people that REALLY took drugs as opposed to the overwhelming majority that smoked pot) sold the "jocks" their drugs and there was no animosity. Most of that came from inter-year stuff, people you didn't know in other years.

Aside from the universal "smartest kid/dumbest kid" individual extremes and the very real existence of "cool/uncool" people most every person is parts of at least four or five of those indentities, and the many people in the groups here fit in with many others. A lot of the groups were formed around which classes you took so there was a tendency of the kids in the bottom classes fitting into more groups in the bottom classes and vice versa, but there was no stereotypical groups because of that.
My personality has been set since about 15. only my knowledge and correspondingly, beliefs have changed.

bhutocracy 04-12-2003 10:04 PM

I'm not denying the herd instinct - it was strong, sickening at times and permeated everything, but not that stereotypically.

kmanrox 04-12-2003 10:06 PM

bully/class clown

badmunchkin 04-12-2003 10:09 PM

hmmm, that wasn't my high school experience. Everyone at my HS was pretty much a walking stereotype. Maybe 'cuz I went to high school in Florida. They do say shit flows south.:1orglaugh

Joe Sixpack 04-12-2003 10:12 PM

FREAK!

Die yuppie die!

The only thing I am truly afraid of is conformity.

cluck 04-12-2003 10:15 PM

I was a skinhead my first 2 years but I just kinda mellowed out and became my own person. I guess you could say punk, but not a walking punk rock stereotype. Definetly a social butterfly though. I was friends with everyone but I wasn't really "popular" or anything.

fnet 04-12-2003 10:24 PM

Didn't go to high school.

hey don't get me wrong, if you wanted to do a "breakfast club" you could have picked out a stereotypical dumb jock, a stereotypical geek a stereotypical stoner etc. but only by specifically picking out 5 or 6 individuals from a year of 250 students in a 1200 school, not 5 or 6 random people. Randomly you'd get a half dozen average kids in uniform and wouldn't really be able to tell anything from talking or looking at them, except gauging by size and fitness for "jock" and long hair for "stoner" Then the stereotypical dumb jock would go back to his group of 10 mates, some of which are in the top classes, some of them smoke dope, some of them play in a band, some of them surf, some of them paint, some play computer games etc etc.

I guess in the region I grew up in there were a lot of drugs, so although there were specific "stoners" most everyone took drugs, to the point where there were "geek stoners" - one of the guys that topped australia in physics at the end of highschool took mushrooms and smoked pot to relax for exams. The guys that played D&D were the same guys that played in bands and took hard drugs. So that may have been a levelling agent, also it was a small coastal town public school, not a private city college so the main areas of entertainment were drugs or physical activity of which surfing melded with anyone that did any kind of phsyical activity and drugs melded with anyone that surfed :)
Also with the whole school uniform thing, I guess it takes some of the segregating apect out of things, it's not like people are wearing a "WWJD?" tshirt when they walk over to talk to a goth in school uniform.

If you were "different" (and therefore a fruit :)) there was general condemnation/ignoring but no physical picking on or anything. "Jocks" in years above or years below (probably moreso as their ranks thin after year 10 when a lot leave to become tradies) might have stirred some verbal shit, but no fights just grunting herd instinct bullshit. There was definately a pressure not to stand out, but in uniform it's hard to have a "trenchcoat mafia".

-Was in all groups
-Was a partial geek, gamer and jock
-Was a top student
-Was an aggressive cheater. Probably why I was a top student :)

actually your personality forms at the age of 6 so we are all fucked by the time we hit high school

second once ya out of high school you see there is no such thing as a cool group and anyone who thinks there is prolly wishes they were still in HS :)

being a pornlord is the exception tho lol

gezzed 04-13-2003 07:53 PM

Those of you that went to high school a long time ago are lucky. In my school we have what are known as ginos, I'm not sure how common or familiar this term is to people outside of Canada, or perhaps Ontario even.

But, I don't think I can slot myself into one category. I got good grades, but I didn't wield a grammar stick over my friends or anything. No drugs, but booze is always welcome and um...ooh, and dancing until my legs fall off.

Preppy, honor roll student, chess club, computer club, photography club, Photography Editor for the School Year Book, beverage manager for school special events, wrestling team, campaign manager for the girl who got elected class president, and treasurer.

Oooops, almost forgot the $$$ one. Me and one of my Jewish friends were the class "bookies" and "debt collectors".

Where in Ontario are you from? I'm still in high school as well.

Warden 04-13-2003 10:29 PM

I was the late bloomer. Freshman and sophomore years I was the thin little wanna-be that all the jocks fucked with to make themselves feel better. Then I did some growing up (physically only! I'm still a little immature fucker mentally) and returned the favor.

Sarah_Jayne 04-14-2003 03:39 AM

don't think I fit any of those really. I had friends and stuff but I think I was more of a loner than anything. Trying too hard to appear to be what my parents wanted me to be whilst hiding the punk chick inside of me. Traitor to myself really. Until the last part of senior year where I started telling everyone I had hated for the previous 11 years to fuck off and die. Ah, the birth of the real me.

pornJester 04-14-2003 03:45 AM

I wasn't really in any type of category I guess. I had my small group of friend and was friendly with many others. I was into computers but I don't think you could say I was a geek. If I had to pick one though it would be rocker.

DirtyDanza 04-14-2003 03:48 AM

what about dropout.. I think I finished 6th grade
