Telstra Australia Playing BIG Brother

Interesting article re Telsta, Australias largest Telco Playing BIG brother.

Substancially restrestricting access to newsgroups and e mail marketing

http://www.zdnet.com.au/newstech/sec...0273650,00.htm

They still want their $$'s at the end of the month but offer less for it !!!!

Other Aussie webmasters view of this article most welcomed.

Resolute 04-12-2003 10:16 AM

I really object to restricting access to the net in any way

rowan 04-12-2003 11:24 AM

From what I understand in this article, they're clamping down on spam. Why is that a problem? Are you a spammer?

chupacabra 04-12-2003 11:29 AM

huh... back when i used to bother w/ the erotica binary newsgroups a couple of years back, some of the heaviest spammers for binary posts were on bigpond subnets. i even remember writing a few abuse complaints to their abuse department. nice to actually see an ISP take steps to curtail rampant spamming through their service, i bet bigpond has been threatened by their own upstream provider over said spammers..

I am not a spammer just want the ability to post to the newsgroups and I cant !!! This Sucks !!

never said you were Resolute... just an observation that Bigpond has had a history of letting many spammers run rampant, and that it looks like they finally got smacked hard enough over it to force their hand to do something about it. spammers ruin things up for others often online, this is just another example..

HairToStay 04-12-2003 06:13 PM

I think they need to secure their routers before they worry about spam. They're very well known for their lack of security and abundance of compromised IPs

Unfortunately a couple of years ago, a spammer had telstra disconnected from America for a while. I am not sure exactly how it works but I remember he sent out about 2 million emails that went to or via the states. What ever company they connect to in the states unplugged telstra so the rest of the customers couldn't surf. i was one of them. So one inconsiderate scrote fucked up everything for the rest of us. I can see why they take a hard line with spammer.

Thats the basic gist of what happened but as I say I don't know the hows or whys.

Hahaha. Wasn't me, but i think I know who that coulda been. its ok .. he's got his own spambox in the states now.

Telstra is a fucking joke. Even access through telstra is so badly overpriced it's stupid. Whats with these 3 gig/month caps on broadband? Already paying $110 per month for Adsl. Gotta do something about this prehistoric internet access we seem to have to stick with. Had a mate who got cable (3 gig/mo limit) and burned 7 gig. He got a bill for something like $1100 !

LOL I had the 3 gig month plan on cable. Allways used more. Your right, they are insanely expensive.

Yerr I am with you guys on this.
They are expensive. Their standard of delivery of services is at best poor and now they are restricting access to Newsgroups BUT they continue to charge TOP dollar for the privilege of being a Telstra Bigpond Broadband consumer. !! Interestingly they have a monopoly on Broadband in my area!!

They have us by the balls, well and truely:Graucho

Not for long. If you can get iinet then you can get ADSL plans which are cheaper and only lower in speed once you pass your download limit.

What I find funny is that American internet companies were going to start limiting downloads and charging for downloading more, but there was such an outcry, and hints of lawsuits, that they didn't go ahead.

Here in Aus we know we cant do shit, so we put up with it. oh well. still like the exchange rates though :)

Thanks for info Sausage ! We are all to lay back downhere, there should be some sort of industry representation to Telstra in an attempt to get them to heel.. What do yu reckon ?

I will be contacting the head of Telstra BigPond broadband,

Justin Milne

tomorrow and suggest everyone else does the same.

As our coy are not a spammer it is a "Restraint of Trade" :Graucho

The problem is that telstra acts as a reseller for many of the other companies. Until we get a decent telco here who has their own network (don't say optus), we will continue to battle with Telstra.

I don't see anything improving. Same situation as the banks. An international review of the australian banks said something like "The banks treat the australian public like battery hens". Our govt cant seem to regulate the banks, so how on earth will it regulate telstra.

Our law system is so weak that you wouldn't stand a chance.

yeah, our telco here is fucking awful too. not quite that bad on prices, but what they lack in "fairly reasonable" prices they make up in the worst customer service, ever.

they gave me 5mb of web space on their servers, and haven't stated a bandwidth limit. i'm gonna check that out, and if it's true, i'm going to start using it for paid tgp listings on large tgps. fuck them.

Careful man. don't do paid listings. They will shut your account down quicker than it takes to crash a passenger jet with Mohammed Abdulah as the captain.

Tried that one, so don't waste a paid listing :)

how can they? if they specifically state that there is no bandwidth limit on my virtual account, then that seems like bad business. i'm doing some investigating first. probably get it in writing in person so they don't have cause to fuck me.

although they _have_ fucked me so many times on my dsl line i want to start shooting.

Get a hun listing, redirect the traffic, and when he img src's you, redirect that to your isp ... say something critical ... like the news servers :1orglaugh

just kidding. I would never suggest such a course of action. :winkwink:

If you can get Telstra DSL then you can most likely get comindico residential DSL via a reseller. It's also off the Telstra DSL network so you could probably change over without a tech needing to visit your house.

I have seen wholesale rates starting at $58/mo for an unlimited (100% - no limits) 64/256k link. I'd expect to see consumer pricing at $80 or better for unlimited in the near future.

Some resellers are also selling below cost with relatively low limits, and making up the difference on overage fees.

Perhaps once the government has sold off it's remaining portion of telstra it will begin acting on the issues -- governments shouldn't control utilties, it creates too much inefficiency.

Fuck the war on IRAQ ... bring our troops back for the war on telstra.

Aussie 04-13-2003 02:10 AM

This is a true story - Based on Optus Cable

A few months ago my cable connection at the telephone pole somehow was loose and my modem could not connect to my isp.
Like this was not my fault, the damm optus line was getting a bad connection, so I called the techs.

Mind you this was on a Thursday I rang up telling Optus my cable was down, the quickest they could send out a tech was Monday Morning at 9:00am....So be it.

So Monday 9:00am came, no Tech ...Waiting ....Waiting...At 5:00pm he turned up, and get this he didn't have the equipment to fix the damm thing (That was a waste of a day). The tech said that he will arrange for it to be fixed on Tuesday morning...GOOD !

O.K like it's tuesday now at 1:00pm still no techs around so I ring up. Get this the tech who came out on Monday forgot to tell the Office to send out tech guys today....Bloody Idiots.

Now it's Wednesday Finally they came out in the Morning, fixed the cable. A two hour job !

So I rang up the Main Office and complained that I was almost 1 week down....They stated that in their terms and condition that if the connection goes down dip dip the are no reimbursements.

So I asked to talk to a higher authority, and was put thru and explained everything. They agreed to give me a $12 discount .

Lost faith in optus after they converted to limited downloads, and refused to service units or townhouses. Even offered to pay a tech an hourly rate, but no ... "its company policy not to service townhouses".

Sausage 04-13-2003 09:17 AM

HAHAHAHA !!!!
The ISP I do part time work for asked me to block all porn traffic through their system. I said they couldn't because it was near to impossible. So they get in a guy who charges $120 an hour, and 7 hours later he says he has blocked all porn thru their servers.

I am still uploading/downloading, and not one of my sites is affected. Fucking cracks me up. I should have charged that to sit on my ass and do nothing.

Resolute 04-13-2003 07:32 PM

Contacted Telstra today and they advised that a e mail went out to all Broadband users re getting Newsgropes chopped from the 16th of March for 5 days and their subsequent restrictions. On further investigation the Telstra Supervisor said they hadn't done this.

When pressed he said he would escalate the complaint.

Which probably means nothing will eventuate from this phone call.

I just want communication from them so we know where we are and what are the restrictions placed upon us, re postings is it 1 a day 3 a day or what. I don't have a crystal ball to know what their restrictions are.

so pissed :Graucho
