Where should I go? Phuket OR Koh Samui?

I'm thinking of spending a week in Thailand. Should I go to Phuket or Koh Samui?

psyko514 04-10-2003 09:25 PM

fuck it. hahhahahahahahahahahahahahahhaha...

i'd love to live there.

chupacabra 04-10-2003 09:28 PM

phuket, definitely... i have a home there, it is beautiful. Koh Samui has been ruined by expatriate profiteers over the last 10 years, the last time i visited (about 3 years ago) i couldn't believe how poluted and filthy it has become, backpacker scum littering the beaches w/ trash, just disgusting. phuket, definitely... if you want nightlife, aim for Patong... if you want quite and relaxation, go more for Rawai or Karon. let me know if you need any other information, c'ahp-khung'cr'op..!

phuket.... hahahahhahaha...
that's so great

BRISK 04-10-2003 09:33 PM

Hmmm....before you said that I was leaning more towards going to Koh Samui, but all I really have to base my decision on is pictures I've seen, and those can be deceiving.

Never been there myself but had some friends that were there and liked Phuket a lot. Never heard of the other place.

From reading Lonely Planet...you leave with the opposite impression. It seems like the consensus is that Phucket was "ruined" by tourism long ago and all the "packaged tourists" and the like go there whereas Koh Samui is the new "hip and in" place. I have not visted either so I have no opinion, just heresay.

I spent 8 weeks in Thailand last year but in the south I went to Krabi area (Ao Nang beach...) which I loved. Another great island I enjoyed was Ko Chang where i spent a week.

If anyone is planning a trip to those parts and has a few extra days - I highly recommend you get your butt off the beach and take a side trip to see Angkor Wat in Cambodia. It was the highlight of my Asia trip (Burma, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia). It will undoubtedly become more popular and famous then the Pyramids in Egypt in short order and you gotta check it out if you go anywhere near Thailand...

DirtyDanza 04-10-2003 09:45 PM

well I do thailand at least 3 times a year... personally I like nana in bangkok... patong beach in phukut... and koh samui homes my favorite thai massage girl in the world.... so I mean the best to to is go for 2 weeks do bangkok... koh samui phuket... and phi phi phi phi is where the movie "the Beach" was filmed..... if you want more info just icq me I can tell you wher to go and what you'll find .... how much money to bring... ect ect..... oh and pattya is nice to... but phuket holds my heart.... I mean you rent crotch rockets for 8 bucks all day then bang thai hookers all night.... whats better than that....

at one point about 10 years ago, Phuket was being torn up by rampant expansion... its no longer like that however, and still is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Koh Samui and Phi-Phi Don have suffered that fate however, and tenfold... if you like partying w/ europeans on the beach, you'll dig Koh Samui perhaps, but it isn't near as much the 'thai experience' you can experience in Phuket, or even Chiang-Mai... speaking as someone that has spent months of every year for the last 8 years in Thailand, i hate both Koh Samui and Phi-Phi Don (Phi-Phi Lay and some of the other outlying isles are still beautiful beyond belief)... these days Koh Samui is known for massive "Rave" parties on its beaches, and not near as many Thai people even live there any longer, compared to the expatriate populace..

Can anyone recommend any hotels with high-speed net access in Bangkok?

What about resorts in Phuket? Recommendations please!

Crow 04-10-2003 10:48 PM

From what I have heard from friends that have been there Phuket you will be hard up for access at all. Then again maybe they just used that as an excuss to get offline for a few days. :D

yes... a real good hotel to stay at in Bangkok is the 'Evergreen Laurel', it is on Ramas V road and offers high-speed internet via cat5 in every room; go for the standard room, it is easily nicer than many suites and is decorated w/ nicer thai-style furniture and such, about $70 a night..

internet cafe's on every corner, about half of which have leased 256k lines via satellite uplink, not too bad unless you need to do huge transfers fast..
