Finally, I have a wireless solution at home that works!

I've tried them all, a couple of wireless 802.11, powerline, etc. with shitty results. I think my house was to big.

But now total success! After reading PC Mag, I bought some Siemens Powerline Ethernet Adapters and they rock. They have powerline Ethernet, powerline wireless access points, etc. And it's cheap, just $59 a point on ebay.

Finally I'm in the 21st century.

Lens,

How much pootang do you get?

Pornwolf 04-10-2003 08:16 PM

Damn man, why don't you ask Hef if you can convert your palatial estate into the NoCal Playboy Mansion?! Anything too big for 802.11 is worthy.

I couldnt get these to work for me. Maybe old houses have shitty wiring.

A desk on wheels and a wireless NIC - almost the ultimate convenience! (Especially when you're right next to the fridge like me *grin*)

Congrats, Lens!

Post some links to the product you purchased please.

So ya wanna come over to my place and fix mine so my kids can play Xbox Live without me running a network cable halfway across the house?

Lensman 04-10-2003 08:43 PM

You can plug in a wired ethernet port or a wireless access point into ANY electrical plug in your house, or your neighbors (but you can password it). No software install for the wired points at all!

So I plug one of those babies into my Linksys wired hub and an access point into an electrical socket where da Xbox may be?

Lensman 04-10-2003 08:56 PM

Yep, and it's the same as connecting an ethernet cable.

PersianKitty 04-10-2003 08:58 PM

and since it's after the hub you're kinda protected eh?

Any firewall problems? etc?

I've not wanted to go wireless cause I've heard all sorts of weird things. But if this goes into my 4 port hub just like the cable to one of my PCs.....sign me up!

BRISK 04-10-2003 09:12 PM

If you have to plug it into an electrical socket, than how does that make it a "wireless" solution?

m0rph3us 04-10-2003 09:22 PM

hmm what about 'snoops' ? can't anyone pick up the 'signal' and get all the data you're transfering ?

Because you can be online anywhere. Either connected or disconnected. You can put wireless base stations anywhere.

And did I mention the outlets are slightly bigger than a AC Adaptor.

hyper 04-10-2003 09:24 PM

Siemens kicks ass
they are huge in Europe. but not here in the U.S
Top Quality Shit

smashface 04-10-2003 09:25 PM

It sounds like you are using the powerline wireless bridges along with wireless cards.

Oooohh....I got it, you plug the base stations into the socket. I was thinking you had to plug your computer into the socket. Nice.

My tech was telling me about some new wireless set up that works up to 30 miles away..But that sounds made up to me.

I have a lynxus and it works all the way to the pool

jimmy3way 04-10-2003 10:05 PM

I'm sticking to my 50 foot long Cat 5 cable and a deck chair on my porch.

Shit I just gave away how big my flat is, huh?

By the way Lensman, RAM told me about that event you left Phoenix for: hope it was a good one.

I love highspeed wireless. Nothing beats watching the big screen while on the notebook surfing.
