Question concerning copyrights and registering domain names...
Is there something wrong with registering a common mistype of a sponsor and then redirecting traffic to your affiliate link?
for example, say i register wwwpornkings.com and redirect everything to my pornkings affiliate link... is there something wrong with that? what about redirecting to another affiliate program or my own program? |
thanks for the idea, I am off to godaddy.com now........

Doesn't matter if you send the traffic to the company who's marks you're infringing or not. Legally they could sue you, whether they would actually do so or not depends on the company and how you infringe on their marks.
There's an old thread here about people who had Tawnee Stone domains getting C&D's from Lightspeed, even the ones promoting Lightspeed with the domains. |
for the record, this is purely for arguments' sake.
i'm arguing with someone another board who posted the following: "I own a bunch of domain names that are mistypes. wwwrevsharehosting.com is one." And he proceeded to complain that wwwwegcash.com is taken already. my reply was the following: "so you're a domain name squatter that registers mistypes of copyrighted names in order to capitalize off of said names?" i got replies like this: "sorry man but if the people copyright a name they cant have all ways of spelling covered unless they copyright all the ways thats the way it works i buy and sell domains dialy have many names for sale i dont mess with many that give me probs but i do have one hummer?.com however hummer makers can not do anything about it cause it contains the international character ? and they do not have copyrights on it so the adding www or any other typo in it does bypass that law" "example is you can reg a site call it mymicrosoftwindows.com noone could do anything cause it is specifying your's maybe you would make a site telling about your setup you got and all details bill gates cant sue you for it that would mean i can copyright all my domains then sue anyone who uses any of the partial of my names" |
The relevant law is trademark not copyright. That guy is full of shit.

thanks... do you know what the law is? something to do with not capitalizing off of someone's good name by offering similar products/services? |

Something like that. A smart person can make money on his own without spongeing off someone else's customers. It's kind of like "Is it wrong to fuck your neighbor's blind wife if she thinks you are him?" Yeah...it's wrong. |

The actual law differs by country. For the US check out: http://www.uspto.gov/main/trademarks.htm I forget the Canadian equivalent, but Google knows. |
I havent had Flynt Digital say anything about a Hustler related domain yet - but typosquatting has been ruled as trademark infringement.

Head over to http://www.dnforum.com/ and check the "legal issues" section. Several reputable lawyers post there regularly and it's quite informative

Lightspeed went apeshit on this guy over zxtawnee-stone.com
(If you really call goin apeshit sending a form mail that any 3.50$/hour lawyer could type up.) Still it scares most poeple into giving up their domains. http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showth...threadid=82186 |
