hehe, is starting a chain letter illegal?
I just deleted a fowarded email, saying somethig about the FBI scanning all computers for info on iraq or anything, and how iraq were using our computers to store hidden secret files, and there was a link to some 'free' download that makes the affiliate like $1/signup... it's like the MS sends you 1000bucks if you foward it to xx people, you see tons of emails in the message cause it was fowarded so many times, and Im sure this guy got hella signups...
and he (or she) probably just sent it out to a few friends, and they sent it out, and htey sent it out etc etc, is this really spam? The guy sent it to his friends, and whatever happens after that is out of his hands right? |

It's not illegal unless it's like one of those oldschool chain letters like "add your name to the bottom of the list and send $1" --
|
I got a chain letter (postal) once that had traveled all over the world -- it was crazy -- it had all sorts of fucking stamps on it... some shit about "if you don't mail this to somebody blah blah you will have bad luck and die" -
|
I'm still alive tho...
just in case you didn't.... |
If you come up with a good chain letter idea that works -- I want to try it too... Sounds like a lot of fun. I'm wondering if you could put some kind of fancy counter into the emails so you could watch them bounce around the world... Does anyone know how to do this? Can you just insert some HTML into the email like "<img src="blah.cgi">" ??? But I'm wondering how much info gets transmitted -- like can I see the person's IP address?

Just wondering if he'll get flagged or not? I was tempted... for the hell of it |
Chain letter are illegal under two conditions
1) you ask for money in exchange for something -in this case it becomes spam, and it needs to follow all the current state and federal spam laws of where it is sent from 2) you ask for money and tell them they will get money in return... "send $1 to these five people" put your name on the list and send to as many people as you want... -in this case it becomes a pyramid scam, this is much more illegal and depending on the amount of money and people invovled you could actually get the feds after you in this case, which is much less likeyl with spam. |
