Friendly fire

Just watching John Simpson a reporter from the BBC.

A US war plane has just bombed the convoy he is travelling with in the North of Iraq.

stanton 04-06-2003 01:36 AM

no offense but US army is unorganized

they killed more British and Canadians and their own people then the Enemy did:2 cents:

Paul Markham 04-06-2003 01:39 AM

How the heck does a guy clever enough to fly a modern war plane not have the brains to know the difference between a US convoy and an Iraqi one?

Again the Gung Ho effect.

From 15,000 feet, I suspect they all look the same.

I'm sure you have a better plan of action...you should join and school those knuckleheads ;)

UnseenWorld 04-06-2003 02:16 AM

It's been a dirtly little secret for a long time: many soldiers are killed by friendly fire.

But the Iraqis kill their own people intentionally, which is a difference between them and us.

I saw an interview with a british military spokesman talking about how careful RAF pilots are when choosing targets and as an example said they even go as far as to take some binoculars with them to get a closer look before bombing something.. just to be sure.. don't know if thats what all the RAF pilots do or just an isolated example but still.. all pilots should know the difference between a british challenger tank and a russian made t72 or whatever iraq uses.. pilots of A10 'tank busters' should certainly know!!

The simple thing is to see how many of these are down to US and how many down to UK forces.

The pilot was not being fired upon, he was not so high as to not be able to see the coloumn properly. The US pilots keep doing this.

The coverage on the BBC live cam is excellent. Just seen the knocked out tank in Baghdad.

US military pilots and Special Operation Forces are trained to the highest degree and their training is continuous. The "Gung Ho" effect is one that every military of note desires and attempts to instill. The "Gung Ho" effect is the difference between a "warrior" and someone who is just putting in their time.

This matter will be investigated to the best of the military's ability. It will be studied and if possible there will be lessons learned and implemented. No machine is perfect, and certainly no "war machine" is ever going to be perfect. War is not an exact science, but an art. Bottom line, "shit happens".

You couldn't be MORE wrong if you tried.

IDIOT

Paul Markham 04-06-2003 02:54 AM

It's just that "shit happens" seems to happen more often when they are US pilots.

It may even have something to do with the "Gung Ho" effect, which as I pointed out is desired and is attempted to be instilled in professional soldiers. An American military commander would prefer to suffer the occasional "friendly fire" incident and have troops that are instilled with the "Gung Ho" effect and be aggressive "warriors" than to have troops that are overly cautious. Who knows, this particular pilot may have been overtly derelict, and if so an investigation may reveal this.

Read this http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/2921807.stm

It was a convoy of cars. Not even military vehicles.

Paul Markham 04-06-2003 03:17 AM

It seems British troops are going into Basra and they have found the body of "Chemical Ali" the general who ordered the gassing of Iraqis and Iranians.

It is being reported here that they found the body of his body guard.

You should be watching it on the BBC.

It now seems there has been an attack on a convoy carrying the Russian envoy.

Jakke PNG 04-06-2003 03:42 AM

Why do people keep defending friendly fire?
It's just simply unacceptable, no matter who does it.

CENCOM just stated that they do not yet know if there was an incident, and if there was an incident, they do not have any details of the incident. They said that they had been notified in advance that the envoy would be leaving Baghdad, and as far as they knew the envoy was still on the road and moving.

theking 04-06-2003 04:47 AM

CENCOM also reported that the body of "Chemical Ali's" bodyguard was found but at this point they do not know the status of "Chemical Ali".
