Two diet drinks a day could double the risk of diabetes, study finds

Two fizzy drinks a day could double the risk of diabetes - even if they are diet versions - a Swedish study has found.

Research by the Karolinska Institute on 2,800 adults found that those who consumed at least two 200ml servings of soft drinks daily were 2.4 times as likely to suffer from a form of type 2 diabetes.

Many fizzy drinks are sold in 330ml cans, meaning that one and a half cans would be enough to double the risk.

Those who drank a litre of such drinks saw a 10-fold rise in their chance of suffering from the condition.

The increased risks were the same regardless of whether the drinks were sugary or artificially sweetened, the research published in the European Journal of Endocrinology found.

Researchers said the sugary drinks may have induced insulin resistance, triggering the cases of diabetes.

They have been saying this for years, but much of the research is suppressed or discounted. These huge multi-national corporations have the power to do this.

People have been getting fatter since the invention and sale of 'diet' drinks. Diet drinks taste vile. If your going to drink a diet drink, drink water, fresh coffee or tea ! It's very healthy and its NOT uncool to do so! (sorry to sound like an asshole)

Diet drinks do not work. What percentage of non-overweight people actually drink diet ? It's a minority.

Ok yeah, thats why overweight people drink diet, because they are overweight. But, come on, how many of those people actually lose weight ? In fact, i would put my money on most of those people actually end up gaining weight !

Reason : Diabetes and over eating.

Diabetes - Put simply. The body needs sugar - FACT - and when you starve it. When it does gets sugar, it does not know how to deal with it properly (INSULIN RESISTANCE). Over time, diabetes occurs. Those already with diabetes, it just makes it worse. You gain weight, kidneys get damaged from poorer cardiovascular health and high BP. Diabetes is also the leading cause of DEMENTIA !

Over Eating - You're not getting ANY calories from the diet drink, so you compensate by over eating. Because, your body is screaming out for sugar and carbs!

BTW - A 330ml can of coke ONLY has about 150 calories ! Thats only about 6% of the daily amount for the average male and about 7.5% for average female.
Sugar is a very important part of your diet, like fat is. Just like there are good fats and bad fats, there are good sugars and bad sugars. Unfortunately, the shit inside sugary drinks you buy from the store is filled with the cheapest refined sugar they can lay their hands on. So, its all about moderation. But not abstinence.

You don't need to be a doctor to work any of this out, its common sense. Don't get brainwashed by the hype ffs!

For those who drink diet drinks, stop pumping your body full of chemicals. Go back to drinking full sugar drinks, but do so in moderation. You will find you eat up eating less, and your blood sugar will be better regulated !

Studies have clearly shown, that those with diabetes consuming sweeteners, get sicker.

After you've been on just tea and water for a decade or more, anyone drinking stuff like coke, fanta and the diet versions starts to look like drug abusers, yesterday I was a restaurant at a theme park where they assume everyone wants a fizzy drink; they give everyone a coke cup as you walk in. In the small print on the menu it says you can make a special request with the staff to swap it for a tea, we did, but took about 5 minutes and staff appeared confused..."How dare you not want coke!"

"It was also possible that those consuming low calorie drinks may have switched to them after a long history of drinking sugary versions, which could explain the link with diabetes, he added.

Consumers of soft drinks were likely to have a lifestyle which was less healthy overall, a factor which the study tried to adjust for."

This was my first thought. Perhaps it doesn't matter if the drinks are diet or not because people who consume those drinks daily are probably not making the best health decisions overall, like the people who get a Big Mac meal with a Diet Coke.

Or maybe the people are drinking diet because they are already overweight or diabetic. What a shit "conclusion" from a study.

                              I drink 3 things:
                              Water
                              Red Bull
                              Beer

I have been cutting way back on the final two. Amazing how different I feel, look, and my digestive system works when running "clean." It is difficult to go completely H2O, but slowly getting there.

this is exactly what is happening. the calories avoided by a good part of the people in any study like these are drinking diet soft drinks to compensate for over eating in general as well as eating sugars from starches throughout the day instead. Which is completely counter productive. The real problem is the over consumption of sugars and starches, but those don't get the headlines enough.

The only negative thing that happens with diet soda consumption is it has almost no affect on satiating people, if anything it makes them more hungry. This does not equate to a cause of the disease though as you could say the same with drinking water.

I hate the taste of diet drinks. Some say they can't tell the difference but I get a bad bitter aftertaste. I never drink them.
