The little checkboxes below the creditcard/personal info on the join page..

They give free or paid trials that recur just the same, if they surfer wants them.

That way you can recur more than just that 1 initial membership, or sell them out to other people using the same processors

I'm not sure if I understand your question...

But cross sales are when a surfer joins your site, and then you try to sell him another, relevant site, before he puts his credit card away. Perhaps offering a "deal" so sweeten things up, making him say, "what the hell, OK."

(a little box on the bottom of join page that is pre-checked that signs surfer up for some 40 bucks a month site)
