American Beer is Like Drinking Water!

JeremySF 04-01-2003 10:33 PM

smallcock..... I drink Anchor Steam, and as far as I'm concerned Molson is piss compared to Anchor.

TheJimmy 04-01-2003 10:34 PM

Neither....

Corona or German all the way....

but if you gotta do the Canadian or US beer, I guess MJD or Molson's will do in a pinch....

I've heard that as well, regarding Czech beer. Gotta try it one day.

I generally steer clear of this debate since you don't even get the same Bud in the States that you get in Canada (Bud is stronger in Canada). I also steer clear of Molson, for the most part. Personal preference. I usually drink what the BCers (west coast Canada) call Fishpiss... or Kokanee (hey I can joke about the beer I drink, I don't know many who actually do). Once in a while I'll have MGD or LGD, they seem to be about the same. For the most part I don't like any beer below 5% though. Too many fucking bathroom trips to be worth the effort.

TCPL 04-02-2003 12:33 AM

Wait a minute... why do so many ppl know what piss tastes like? WTF??

lol

Stronger in Canada? Budweiser is 5% pretty much everywhere except for a few fucked up states like UTAH (and a couple of others). Is it more than 5% in Canada? It's not more than 5 in most places I've been.

Yeah, try Czech beer. I'm sure you can get a Pilsner Urquell at your market.

Hmm.. when I hung out near Seattle, I'd drink Bud but it never occurred to me to check the %. I had seen other beers there with less. Still, from what I'm told, Bud is brewed by Labbatt's in Canada, so it's probably not quite the same taste. Lotta people drink it here though so it can't be all bad..

GTS Mark 04-02-2003 12:44 AM

I drank about 600 american beers last weekend. I wasn't even all that drunk :winkwink:

hehehe.....a lot people also like golden showers, but that doesn't make them good. I'm sure Bud tastes just as watery in Canada as it does here. I had Bud in England with "real, Czech hops" but it still tasted like the same ol' Bud. I've had Budveiser from Czech (I believe) and that wasn't too bad.

Who knows? Maybe Washington is one of those fucked up states. Don't they have a weird law in Washington about not buying alcohol on Sundays or having to buy liquor only from a state run liquor/beer store? Can you imagine, having to buy liquor/beer from a state run store? Seems ridiculous, but I'm pretty sure that's the law in Washington.

If Northwest microbrews are "American beer," American beer kicks ass. Whether you're talking about an everyday convenience store beer like Weinhard's Blue Boar Ale or an IPA from Widmer or Black Butte Porter from Deschutes Brewery, you actually have to try pretty hard (or go to a pretty low-down bar) to even FIND dreck like Bud Light or PBR around here. (Okay, that last part was a bit of an exaggeration...but there is no excuse for drinking bad beer around here.)

We bought our beer at a supermarket... so no, Washington isn't one of those anal states ;)

BC is an anal province for that, though last I heard their provincial government went and said "we're not here to run businesses, so we're going to let the liquor stores become privately run."

Best news I've heard out of BC in years. Though I live in AB where you can't go a block without passing one.. :drinkup

What the FUCK are you talking about? Budweiser is the prototypical American piss-water beer.

Mythology my friend. Except for a few fucked up states (like Utah), beers in America are every bit as strong as anywhere else. The real reason why you're confused....

-----
It gets confusing for U.S. beer drinkers because the alcoholic strength of wine the world over and beer almost everywhere outside of the United States is measured by volume. The U.S. legal standard (many states regulate the strength of beer) is by weight. For instance, a beer that is 3.2% by weight is about 4% by volume. If you know the alcohol by volume (abv), multiply that by .8 and you'll be pretty close to the alcohol by weight (abw). Inversely, multiply the abw by 1.25 to find the approximate abv.

As you know, it is a misnomer that darker beers are stronger than lighter colored beers (Guinness Stout at 4% abv versus Westmalle Trippel at 9% abv should be proof enough). But it's safe to bet that barley wines, imperial stouts and doppelbocks will impair your driving much quicker than Bud Light.

So here's a list of beers, the style they represent, and the alcohol content (by volume and by weight) of that particular beer. Of course, the alcohol content of other beers of the same style may vary. We've limited the list to 20 beers. If you'd like information about a particular beer feel free to send email to [email protected] and we'll try to get you the information.

Celis White - Belgian Wit - 4.9abv/3.9abw
Chimay Grand Reserve - Trappist - 9abv/7.2abw
Duvel - Belgian Strong Golden Ale - 8.5abv/6.8abw
Fuller's London Pride - Bitter - 4.7abv/3.8abw
Gordon Biersch Marzen - Marzen-Oktoberfest - 5.8abv/4.6abw
Pete's Wicked Brown - American Brown Ale - 5.2abv/4.2abw
Pilsner Urquell - Pilsner - 4.4abv/3.3abw
Redhook ESB - Extra Special Bitter - 5.4abv/4.3abv
Samuel Adams Boston Lager - Bohemian-style Pilsener - 4.75abv/3.8abw
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale - American Pale Ale - 5.3abv/4.2abw
Theakston Old Peculier - Old Ale - 5.6abv/4.5abw

Only the Europeans know how to brew a decent beer.

Except for the English.

TCPL 04-02-2003 12:56 AM

Well, apart from hardly recognizing any of those beers, I get the point of the research (who here wouldn't want to do research and testing in that area?! hehe).

Joe, wtf are you talking about? Have you had any microbrews?

I'm just talking about mass produced beer.

If you really want a "micro-brew" go to Belgium.

Fuck they have literally hundreds and hundreds of beers. Mainstream and micro-brew.

The Europeans have been doing it for hundreds of years. Their beer is simply better in all respects.

Even mass-produced beer is not great throughout most of Europe except for a few countries like Belgium, Germany, Czech, etc..

btw...
