This is the big misconception. Most of American's didn't pick these two. About 29% of the people in the US are registered Democrats. About 26% are registered Republicans. Most states don't have open primaries which means during either primary only those registered to that party can vote. So 29% of the people chose Clinton, but if you break it down she got about 56% of the vote during the primaries so that means about 17% of the population actually selected Clinton. The numbers are smaller for Trump. Since there were more Republican candidates he actually only got about 46% of the Republican vote so somewhere around 11% of the population chose Trump.

If you are a registered independent you have two choices. If you live in a state with open primaries you could have voted for someone other than these two during the primary election. If you don't then you are at the mercy of those who are in these parties or whichever third party candidate you think you might like best and most of them end up being very obscure and crazy candidates. If you want to run as a third party candidate and have a legit shot you will need to be ready to spend hundreds of millions of dollars.

So, in the end, most people didn't select these two and they have no other real option so when it comes down to these two they ultimately end up choosing the lesser of two evils which is much harder to determine in this election.
