I stayed there 2 months and liked the Getsemani area (10 minute walk from the histoic clocktower).

In the evening around 6:00 pm people gather there with music, street artist, tourist, locals, drinking beer on a square (Plaza Santisima Trinidad).
Buying weed and coke is best in this area (for the people that want that).
I walked there in the nights, never had a problem. The historic center is also nice
For a little better beaches you must go to Boca Grande. There youcan have seats and beer at the beach. Or better, take a boat tour to the realy nice beaches if you have some extra days.

I walked in the middle of the night alone in the historic center and getsemani and never felt unsave. Met a colombian guy that was robed in his hotel by a prostitute, but that happens everywhere. Always lock your things before getting someone in your room.

i ate a lot in local restaurants in Getsemani area, 4 USD for a meal, soup, meat, vegetables with a drink. Just look where the locals eat, that are the best restaurants.
