How Social Media Has Changed the Camera?and Photography?Forever
Its common sense to not post pictures on social media that may convey an irresponsible lifestyle to current or future employers. But there's a subtler dynamic at play we should consider, especially today, National Camera Day, before we upload that beautiful Hawaiian sunset. What if the pictures we post that show us in a positive light are damaging in their own right?
Three years ago, German researchers published a study called "Envy on Facebook: A Hidden Threat to Users' Life Satisfaction?" It found that one out of three people experienced feelings of jealousy and depression after viewing other people's Facebook pictures. The greatest culprit that bummed out the most people? Vacation shots. For single people in their 30s, happy family pictures made them sad. For women, attractive pics of their female peers made them feel inadequate and invidious. its this way because different people view different situations differently. its a simple system that causes a lot of envy amont people.

It's like when I read the posts on GFY. I feel envy and jealous of so much wit, knowledge, political wisdom, beauty and liberty.

In all seriousness - we of an older generation (over 50) look at Facebook pics posted by the younger generation and think, "Damn...they're out there havin' such a great time partyin' with their friends, doing exciting things...really living life."
And it's easy to get a tad depressed - UNTIL - you realize that, hey...I did all that shit back in the day, too. We just didn't have digital cameras in our hands to immortalize it (or incriminate ourselves) in pics and video. We experienced it without the distraction of a camera perpetually in our faces...or having to take a timeout for a self-absorbed selfie. I remember my voice being hoarse after a Van Halen concert in 1984. But my arm and shoulder wasn't sore from holding a damn cell phone over my head to catch a crappy video image from 60yards away. I was immersed in the concert, the music...the enjoyment of just being there to see it all. Social media has become a quest for everyone to prove to everyone else that they're larger than life. I never understood the need to affirm myself to others that way. Although the edges are rounded and more than a few frames are blurry at best - I like my mental memories. |
