donations from billionaires to universities
Why do billionaires donate so much money to universities?
Is it a long-term, medium-term or short-term investiment? Do students always repay the favour? Do they have to? |
It's usually the college they attended. They'll usually have a building or something named after them.
|
either the school they attended or the school they want their kids to attend
|
it's tax-deductible, no?
|
they don't have to do it.
there are huge tax benefits to it in the US. and yeh, we are shameless - the schools name buildings for them - and that strokes their egos. the microsoft clan 'owns' a bunch of the buildings on UW campus =) Mary Gates hall (mother gates), William H Gates Law School (daddy gates - he is also a regent - kind of like a board of director for the school), there is Paul Allen Library, okay drawing a blank on the rest of them... ~brett |
