TORONTO (CP) - Protective face masks flew off supply store shelves Wednesday as anxious Torontonians sought to shield themselves against a deadly SARS outbreak that prompted Ontario to declare a "health emergency."

Police wearing surgical face masks descended on the east-end hospital where two people died of the pneumonia-like disease, putting yellow police tape around the perimeter and blocking the entrances with their cruisers, Citytv reported Wednesday.

I had to take my daughter to the hospital last night and they thought she might have had it.. not really too funny. Unfortunately she AND her brother are now very ill (SARS or not, doesn't matter much when you're in hickville), and I'm working hard to keep their fevers under 41.

Sars is like AIDS - bio weapon that went out of control...if this thing starts to spread, say bye-bye to the human population. It's starts small at first, but if it's airborn virus with a carrier resistant to the outdoor conditions > sun, humidity, wind, pressure, temperature, then we are ALL fucked. You've seen Motabu I think was the name of the movie with Dastin Hoffman. Well Motabu was mutated form of the Ebola virus - which is real!

SARS is also mutated form of the EBOLA virus. I hope GOD doesn't hate us so much to allow this to wipe us all.

I just called the health line again.. my son and daughter are sick now (my son just woke up with a fever of 40.9). They both have severe coughs, breathing problems and extremely high fevers.. We were on an airplane from Calgary to Toronto not even 10 days ago.. I'm starting to get REALLY worried now, the hospital out here isn't equipped to handle it if it is SARS. *goes into extreme worry mode*

If it's a virus, antibiotics won't do shit.. HOwever they may possibly help with secondary infections that might aggrivate SARS. Antivirulants MAY help to some degree, but as a virus isn't like bacteria and can't be "killed" per se, even antivirulants are sketchy as best, as far as combating it. I hope my little guys have good immune systems.. Hell I hope I do too :(

How about yourself? I gather since your caring for your 2 children that you might catch it yourself. Make sure you take care of yourself as well. Where your kids or yourself in contact with someone in TO with SARS? Chances are slim that it is SARS but just in case, make sure your taking reasonable efforts to protect yourself as well. i was reading something about how it's a combination of virii (i believe this was on msnbc). basically, at the moment it's hypothesized that the lethal cases were the ones with *both* of these infectants. presumably, one made you sick and attacked your immune system. then, if you caught the other one, it would be able to attack while your immune system is damaged.

hypothetically, you can get away okay if you just contract one of the virii. apparently they are relatively similar in their attack, so it very well could indicate a man-made virus.

they have been making some headway apparently too, but they have by no means solved this.

Well they have the best people in the world working on it -- together.

I guess this means research for a cure for HIV/AIDS and every other virus we havent been able to figure out for the past 20 years will be halted for awhile. (ie EBV, CMV, "Chickenpox", Hep-C etc). They work on those for years and years without being able to figure it out.. but they offer hundreds of different "treatment" drugs.

Well.. if and when this anti-viral crack team figures out this SARS virus, maybe they could solve the riddle of the other viruses in the world too..... Odds of that? And why not?

My daughter is on a couch 2 feet from my and my son is upstairs three feet from daddy. I can't do much aside from control the fevers and keep them comfortable, should I be off somewhere in a corner huddled and crying? Piss off.

I could be on my deathbed I'd still be able to care for my children. I'll worry about me when I know I don't have to worry about them anymore ;) Such is the way of the mommy, but I'll take some extra vitamins and thanks for your concern.

When you had your first kid I have heard that you automatically switch into ultraprotective mode....i.e. do absolutely anything for your child.

It doesn't neccessarily have to be manmade to mutate quickly. Viruses work like thus. A virus attaches itself to the cell membrane, "injects" it's genetic material into the cell leaving the protien jacket on the membrane. The genetic material is then taken into the cell nucleus, and it in effect hijacks the cell processes for it's own needs. The cell then, instead of functioning with normal cellular processes, begins producing according to the viral DNA (generally propegation). The "baby" viruses build up inside the cell untli it lyses (blows up basically), and those viruses go on to infect other cells. Now, when the viral DNA is added to the cellular DNA, some of that DNA is transferred in the replication process. It's not unheard of for a viral DNA string to completely mutate in a period of 24-48 hours. This is part of the reason there is no cure for the common cold. The cold is a virus, and it's mutation pattern is so fast it's impossible to actually protect against that itself. Antivirulants work more against the viral vectors (methods of DNA delivery into the cell), and it's an emeging science, far from perfect. It's only in the last decade it's become more mainstream.

No, not people on welfare.. don't take me out of context. People who have a ton of kids so they can STAY on welfare.. In Canada if you have 5 children or more, you can basically sit back and let the goverment take care of you for life. I've seen women who've done it for no reason other than this.. THOSE are the people I think should be shot. And meanwhile their kids run around grubby, sick, and underfed while mommy and daddy smoke, eat, drink and party and leave the kids with sitters.

well said, lm. the only thing i would consider about the natural adaptation is, what would make it replicate the same thing? it seems the cold virus adapts to something new, where thus far there are only 2 strands of this virus. not saying you are wrong by any means, just opening it as a possibility. here's a quote that might make things look a *little* brighter from msnbc:

Have and do when I see it.. it makes me sick.. A lot of times the kids end up taken away, stuffed in foster homes with people who are in it for the money anyways (not always, but in a lot of cases) and the parents do what they want anyways... It's a shitty system, if you ask me. And nobody suffers more than the kids. I hate that the most..
