Change in plans: not entering Baghdad...

Just heard we aren't going into Baghdad until 50% of the Republican Guard is taken out by air strikes. Which seems to make sense and is fine by me.

Anyone else hear this?

Oh, also, there was no convoy leaving Baghdad today, only Basra.

Makes sense to me. They can stay outside Baghdad for a year, if it saves 100 troops it's worth it. Lock those fuckers inside Baghdad, don't let anything in or out.

the problem is, how will they know who's who? if they're dressing like civilians i'm assuming they're mixed in with civilians as well.

Don't we already have that problem?

Problem with that is food and water for the civilians. We'll get killed politically for a standoff. Need to take out the Republican Guard fairly quickly.

Supply ships are docking at the Iraqi port tomorrow. The city is secure enough to start unloading goods. The goal is to get that city functional fairly quickly to get those Iraqi civilians back to work and living a hopefully better life. Would definitely be a good sign for other Iraqi civilians throughout the country.

ya, but i think its impossible for them to know when 50% have been taken out. unless they pretty much plan to wipe out half the city. that would be a public relations nightmare when the civilian death toll grows to very large levels.

before the first gulf war the US bombed them for 37 something days,

stanton 03-26-2003 09:15 PM

blah it was obvious that they would never enter city!!!

it would be fucking insane!!!!!!!

hyper 03-26-2003 09:17 PM

they should sit there and draw the republican guard outside the city..

then bomb the fuck out of them.
urban warfare is a bitch but if anyone can do it, its the U.S Forces.

i think just sitting outside of Baghdad would make them attack, hence drawing them out

Gutterboy 03-26-2003 09:17 PM

If I was Saddam I would integrate Republican Guard units so well with the civilian population of Baghdad that it would be impossible to distinguish between the two. Put 5 Republican guard inside one room in every house or something. That would force the US to fight house to house, street to street for the entire city.

It completely nullifies US air superiority, because they can't be seen bombing civvie houses and apt. buildings.

Maybe Saddam is not as smart as I am, but I can't imagine he isn't going to try this strategy.

This sounds like what he is doing. I would expect some massive loss of life in town and the emergence of the fabled chemical weapons on the troops within range on the outside.

This is the correct strategy. Hopefully it will be the one taken. I do not want to see our troops lured into the urban warfare landscape as there will be too many casualties. Lay seige to the city and wait it out.:2 cents:

That is the approach I would expect him to take also.

Where did you hear this news Sly? Been watching movies all night so I haven't seen any news.
