There is talk about the 82nd Airborne

...which is my old unit...making a drop into Norhern Iraq. If this in fact happens the boys will be proud to wear the Star of a combat jump on their wings when this is over.

My roomie in Germany was 82nd Airborne... great guy, but he was a fucking psycho fuck. Ended up getting booted on a chapter 13.

in 95 (towards the end of my tour) the 3/325th ABCT, detatched from Ft Bragg (home of the 82nd) was redesignated 173rd Airborne Brigade attatched to SETAF. Also, the 4th of the 325th was redesignated as the 3rd 325 desolving the 4th as an active Batallion in the 82nd

AIRBORNE! I was not stationed in Italy. I was medically discharged in '92 after having been injured in the 1st Gulf War in '91.

My brother served 3 years in the Army and 5 in the Corp. He was a TAC SAT MICROWAVE SYS OP in the Army and volunteered to be a grunt in the Corp. He went on one "float" in the Corp and then became an instructor at SOI. By the way he hated the "float" other than the time in ports. Which did you prefer...Army or Corp?

SixNine 03-27-2003 02:23 AM

I didn't know the 502nd was reflagged to the 173rd.
I had a SGM who was in the 173rd in Vietnam. Those are some crazy motherfuckers! Embedded reporters will be saving Iraqi lives LOL.

You armed forces people are simply fucked in the head. No doubt about it.

I'm never seen so many men with serious issues about their own masculinity.

SixNine 03-27-2003 02:25 AM

BTW - Tanker your boys lost two tanks... haha Haji shot the tracks off, what a bunch of DATs.

And for any Amtrackers pretty sweet how they drove off the rode into a ditch and got stuck to other night :) I don't envy that convoy security mission...

It wasn't the 82nd that jumped it was the 173rd.... they used to be the 502nd.

I don't think the 502 was, according to Warden it was the 3/325 that was designated as the 173rd. I have to admit that I have not followed the changes as well as I should have.

If you notice the date of my original post you will see that I was not referring to the 173rd and there is still talk of units from the 82nd jumping in, though part of the 82nd is currently in Afghanistan so I do not know which units. In addition I suspect that the 173rd is still considered to be part of the 82nd.

SixNine 03-27-2003 02:34 AM

Maybe 502 --> 325 --> 173rd?

Fuckit..

nocostporn 03-27-2003 02:35 AM

hmm well if YOU heard it that means the Iraqi's heard it...Ambush!

Who is right? You or Warden? I was editing while you were posting so how do you respond to my suspicion that the 173rd is still considered to be part of the 82nd?

SixNine 03-27-2003 02:38 AM

Now that I "noticed". I do remember them saying that a couple of days ago and then showing a jump. Then they never showed it again and just mentioned it. I don't think it was the 82nd and I don't think the gubmint wanted it widely reported... I've never heard them mention it again, and I've been glued to CNN.

PersianKitty 03-27-2003 02:43 AM

The 502nd still exists. They're part of the 101st Airborne out of Ft Campbell. The 325th is part of the 82nd out of Ft Bragg.

The 173rd was reactivated in June 2000 in Italy as part of V Corps under the South East European Task Force.

SixNine 03-27-2003 03:05 AM

I was dead ass wrong about the 502nd.

Carrie 03-27-2003 04:43 AM

Well, *someone* jumped into northern Iraq at about 1:30 am their time. Up in Kurdish territory. They secured an airfield and are awaiting the planes to bring in ground reinforcements. Got a couple of birds there already and the strip is big enough to bring in some "heavier" light infantry machines.

(At least that's what they've been showing and saying on CNN and MSNBC. I honestly have no clue.)

Did you ever day trade? I used to before this and was in a room that used to say that all the time.

Bulldog-Johnnie 03-27-2003 10:46 AM

Was anybody here in a Ranger battalion or 51st LRRP?

playa 03-27-2003 10:51 AM

Damn those lucky fuckers are gonna get credit for a combat jump,

wasn't Panama the last time there was a combat jump.

Panama was the last time an Airborne unit was credited with a combat jump but I believe one of the Ranger Battalions was credited with one when they jumped into Afghanistan and took an airfield in hostile territory. The last time the 173rd did a combat jump was in Vietnam. It was the only Airborne operation in the entire Vietnam War.

Mr. Jim 03-27-2003 01:18 PM

It has been strange to see my old unit in leading the assault in S. Iraq.

I am feeling awkward.....this is the first time I have been on the sidelines in my adult life.

I believe in our troops. The only thing that matters to me is that they get home soon and we treat them like the heros they are. I only wish people understood how much pride Our Marines,Soldiers,Sailors, and Airmen take in the job that they do. They deserve the highest level of respect.

I was in Amador down by the cause-way right next to the clam beds where the drop happend in Panama I cannot believe it was over 13 years ago

Dec 20th 1989

For those that remember...the catalyst is when Lt. Paz USMC was shot when approaching a road block.....the car he was in was still driven by a Capt long after the incident.
