From what I hear the two pilots were MIA supposedly captured by Iraqi's. So my guess is they took out one of the rotors which would force a landing. The chopper didn't look badly damaged from the picture I saw so it sounds like a mechanical problem that lead to the downing of the Apache.

True. I sam them on CBC from a French News channel. They were not hurt and, as they can be in that situation, calm.

Real shit for these young kids.... and families.

ZoiNk 03-24-2003 03:14 PM

From what i just heard from the news, and quoting US military officials, this was the first time that the US was in conflict with the Iraqi Republican guard Elite forces... and this is the result.

I dont think a handgun could do it, but if you shoot at the rotors with a rifle, you WILL down the apache.
Im educated as a pilot, so im not bullshitting you. But a handgun - hmmm - not sure

iroc409 03-24-2003 03:17 PM

hitting a hydraulic line will make a helo intimate with the ground.

You are true to your french roots, aren't you? Always quick to badmouth everyone for taking action of any kind, yet you are totally unwilling and unable to take action yourself. Do us all a favor and shut your cake hole.

Wouldnt the pilots try to destroy the Apache before any other fuckers got to it before the USA could?

Actually it is possible to bring down a chopper with a simple gun aslong as it's flying low enough to hit it in the engine fans or shoot a hole in the engine inlet. The big B747 has been known to make an emergency landing because it hit a bird in the engine.... it just depends on where he hits it and at what speed, would be the same with choppers i think. Don't know to much about choppers though, i never got into it, was to busy with jets at flight school.

But i admit you would have to be a pretty great sniper to do it.

Xa Graphics 03-24-2003 04:47 PM

shortly, it's a good booty for IRAQ.:)

You'd think they'd have tracking devices on those things for such situations.. as well as some sort of self destruct mechanism that would blow the shit out of it on command.. Just wait for the enemy to gather 'round and whammy!!

Russians have that in the MIG fighter jets, the US SR71 and B2 also have systems like that, selfdestruct i mean. I'm sure many more have it but those are the ones i know about. For the tracking part, the apaches transponder should make sure the US knows where it is but maybe they don't see the need of destroying it.... it could cost more lifes. What can they do with an apache anyway? You think they have guys upthere to fly it? lol
