firewalls - do you like em hard or soft?

ok so my new apartment has shared T1. its been pretty decent, altho there's enough people using it aparently that my old DSL was comparable.

since im directly on a large network, i installed a 4 port linksys router with a firewall built in. does the trick as far as keeping the hacker kiddies out, but it seems to have slowed my internet down considerably.

my question is, would a software security solution be better?

anyone have any experience with this? ive just always had a dsl modem which had a firewall built in, and didnt experience this kind of slow down... not sure wut i should try

I think you should be more concerned with meeting the broads in your apt complex and showing them the "Dawgy Style" ruffff rufff

they are not 'broads' they are women & girls.

and im gay. duh. of course i already know them all, they love me :)

i was thinking of putting a webcam or two on my balcony, since my apartment is RIGHT by the pool and the girls have a tendancy to skinny dip late at nite. :)

wonder if thats legal. how much would u pay to see a live voyeur pool feed? ;)

Linksys, no shit! I thought I was crazy when I hooked mine up, and when I checked my e-mail it would take forever, FTP would take forever to establish a connection, and HTTP seemed laggy too. Maybe I never set it up right? I think hardware firewalls would be better, as the attacker is not probing your computer, he is probing a router.

Go for hard & soft. Security is important, and doing both gives you the best results.

I dont think it is, since technically if they live there, they are considered to be on their living grounds and instates some security issues regarding privacy especially if its a gated apt.

now if the pool was next to your complex maybe so, but watch it if you live there you can be evicted and maybe even arested if you catch an underage girl or soemthing, very risky.

Lynksys are near the bottom of the barrel for networking hardware, cheap consumer-grade stuff... get a better router, avoid crappy software firewalls like BlackIce, ZoneAlarm, etc... if you want a cheap/free software solution, look at 'Tiny Personal Firewall', it is a decent solution for those who don't want to mess w/ real DMZ's and such. symantec makes some very nice routers that aren't really expensive, i'm not fond of Lynksys stuff at all..

We have Black Ice on our notebook, and have never had a problem with it. It is easy to figure out and set up, and it works. Set it up and scan your computer from another IP.

I bought BlackIce some time ago, then read the reviews on it, tossed it, bought Norton Internet, and now use ZoneAlarm, got a URL someplace A fourm security (firewalls) they weren't 2 kind on BlackIce.

I use this URL to check my servers, AFTER programming all blocks except either http, ftp, or pop depending of the box.
