Languages: Would you rather...
Wake up tomorrow speaking ONE language perfectly, fluent to the degree of a college professor and understand all the subtitles, grammar and spellings etc, but be unable to understand any other languages...
Or be able to speak ALL languages but only at a really basic fundamental level of say a 5 or six year old? |
Depends on the language - is it "international" such as English or is it a small one. That may play very strongly in the vote.
As for me - even if it was a small language I say one because I can not imagine not being able to communicate deeper thoughts etc. Unless you ask about languages other than your own - in that case probably all by little. |

Tough call. But I would have to go with one language spoken perfectly. I see the advantages of understanding the basic structure of every language, but you can't really get far if you're limited to only speaking on a semi-illiterate level.

I just made a point that for someone whose language is English it may be different call than for someone whose language is some small one. Due to the fact that English could be useful internationally thus less need to know all the languages. |
All languages just a little, like you said 5 or 6 year old level. Its all you need. Just because you speak at 5 or 6 year old level you say nothing about brain function.

Sorry, I couldn't resist..... |

It would depend, if there's nothing stopping me from going forward and learning one or two languages at an adult level, then knowing all would be a great start in life. If I'm stuck either way I'd take English perfection without a doubt.
