besthost1.com just killed our business. Never use this hosting company!

We are now dead and gone and thanks to these assholes, we just lost everything!
The following email is what we just recieved. I told them I was going to sue them, but they I am outta luck cause of TOS.

SPECIAL NOTICE TO BOX #1 ACCOUNT HOLDERS

<<<SECUTIRY ALERT>>>

As you know over the past few days, we have undergone a few periods
where
box#1 was jailed and unjailed and additional security was being put into
place.

The short version of the situation is as follows..
Again, proven beyond shadow of a doubt another tcp/ack attack using
spoofed
ips has occured on this box before we coule get additional protection in
place. It risked damage to other systems so the box has been removed
from
the rack.

Without getting into huge detail regarding the securoty situation as
this is
still under investigation, we ask that you provide us
your parent account name which is the main domain name that we installed
for
you on this box AND
your current phone number where you can be reached by telephone to be
given
your username and password
to your account.

At current, ALL the accounts are closed and can only be reopened upon a
voice call placed by our main office to you.

You will need to re upload your sites and files and have us do any
special
config we previously done for you including the stacking of domains to
your
server.

We opted NOT to restore files back to this box although it was 100%
possible
for the simple reason that we could possibly reinfect this box and or
allow
access to the user to continue these attacks. It could be a file on
YOUR
site that has done this or one of your sub users. We caution everyone to
carefully scruitinize their sub users and the files that you place on
our
network. We believe in allowing our clients to have a bit more freedom
of
movement on these machines; however, this also means some responsibility
has
to be taken by the account holders to also be more careful of who they
allow
as a user on their system or the files they place on the box.. You can
rest
assured will will indeed locate the person responsible and we will then
turn
over to authorities.

The current hard drive is being Federal Expressed to our FBI contact in
California for examination.

We sincerely regret the inconvenience this caused you and your clients
and
hope to have service fully restored within 24 hours.

Again .. please forward your Full name, telephone number and time zone
you
are in so that our main office can call you when your access is ready.

Please reply to [email protected] emmediately

no shit... what the hell was on your server, reddawg? was an attack being staged *through* your machine, and not towards it..?

picindex 03-23-2003 11:20 AM

I think the FBI talk is just bullshit provided by the host... "The FBI in California" - some like "Cybercrime Division of the FBI Los Angeles office" would be more believable.

And if it is not bullshit then let's see where they claim they are sending it...

Do you really think the FBI is going to waste their time with a hosting company that does $5.00 a month hosting?

People in this business not backing up their own data is beyond me. Sorry, I do not feel sorry for you. Backup next time.

Good point; hope you have *complete* 2257 documentation on hand, reddawg! The FBI will be looking for any excuse to bust an evil pornographer.

That's what rackshack is for. Get a damn 99 buck box and solely use it as backup using rsync.

It is also a good idea to stay on the ball with security updates to your server so such things like they reported to you do not happen.

I back up twice.

1. I mirror 1 harddisk to another
2. I rsync to a cheap rackshack server.

If such a thing happens all I have to do is change the dns entries and I am back to business.

Woah, a cracker got access to a server maliciously?! I bet the FBI will be all over this one! Hey Hoover, halt the projects you are working on we have a hacked porn server!

That shit happens all the time, they should just get over it and fix you up...
