When did avocados lose their flavor?

Have you noticed this?

A neighbor has an avacado tree and they give us a couple a couple times a year, they are loaded with flavor while the store bought ones are always so very bland.

I think I recall store bought avocados having flavor....

BIGTYMER 01-28-2016 03:59 PM

Because store bought ones aren't ripened on the tree.

They store them for weeks/months and then hit them with methane or something to ripen them.

it's not methane, it's ethylene

Has it always been that way? I sure think I remember when store bought avacados had at least some flavor.

At least that's the case with bananas

I can tell you for certain North American fruit in stores are fucked. Everything tastes like plastic.

In countries where it is sold naturally you cannot compare. They are full of juices and taste like real fruit. It makes you wonder.

Dead serious. Enjoy! You might be eating year old fruit. :)

Off topic but my other thing is chicken in North American stores. They are huge. Like 2-3x of what a normal chicken should be. They are pumping them with steroids for sure.

Vendzilla 01-28-2016 04:55 PM

Avocados are like Pineapples. When you get them in Hawaii, they taste much better, Avocados are the same way. I grew up with an Avocado tree in the yard they rocked. Now all I have is a tangelo tree, which reminds me, time to harvest!

It was at 4:15pm on a Wednesday in 1997. I remember it well.

Maybe because you did not have those avocados from neighbors before. Once you tastes that you noticed the difference.
Same thing with tomatoes happened to me. I was eating store bought ones and they were ok, once I got "home grown" ones I was reluctant to eat store bought due to them having no flavor.

I have a huge penis and also commercial greenhouses, commercial fruit and veggies in the USA taste like shit because they need time to absorb sugars from the ground, tomatoes are a great example, for outdoor production they will use sorts that ripen quick, thus being more fleshy and spongy...

my tomatoes are so sweet you understand why its a fruit...but they are grown in greenhouses and are not susceptible to most parasites and diseases nor am I under pressure from the weather so the fruit is picked at the optimum time...

so why do not commercial producers in the USA make quality fruit and veggies and not this plastic shit? this is an interesting point, even if I do say so myself, its: money laundering

how do you make dirty money clean? grow fast. cheap, select resistant seeds that give plenty but taste like crap, spray with chemicals until it glows in the dark, and then wait for the karentz period to pass and dump dump dump...

say you got 100 tonnes...you can easily say you got 200 or even 300...unload that shit and cook the books and say you sold it at premium prices...in most countries agriculture is not taxed at all and even if it is, veggies have no serial number, its notoriously hard to prove anything...you now have clean money that you can account for and where you got it...

normal producers go broke because money laundering dumps crap on the market just to get rid of it...when the dump happens all prices drop and natural production costs like a mother fucker...on the other hand if they quit natural and produce cheap quick shit they will stay in biz...less expenses, less work, more spraying, quicker ripen, more crops...

the USA once attacked vietnam, a small farming nation that gave no shits about politics, the crops grew the same under the commie or democratic sun, but the USA invaded, and how ironic is it that crops actually grow better under the commie sun after all because capitalism makes everything a scam :1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

enjoy your spongy fruit :2 cents:

No doubt. Ever seen the Costco/Sams Club chickens? So gross. They're fucking huge. The meat isn't even like meat.. it's all spongey. :Oh crap

They do it to maximize profits. I thought it is common sense for everybody. More tonnes = more money.

Not to say that nobody launders money in tomato business, BUT in that case it does not matter whether you grow good ones or bad ones.
In your example it was 100 bad ones and cooked the books that they sold 200-300 premium tonnes.
So the same way they can grow 75 good ones and cook the books that they sold 200-300 premium tonnes.
What is the difference what kind of tomatoes they grow for money laundering? Same amount of money they get/launder in both cases.
Growing good or bad ones is irrelevant there...
Not to mention that you can get any business to launder money...

I don't think I ever had fresh avocado. Now I'm wondering what it taste like. I'm guessing it's going to be comparable to fresh eggs and store bought eggs.

Fresh ones are just stronger tasting.

mikesouth 01-28-2016 10:45 PM

While it is correct that fresh is best it should be noted here that no strain of avocado ripens on the tree, avocados do not ripen until they fall off the tree or are picked.

It is true that they and most other produce are picked then sprayed with chemicals that ripen them, which is why tomatoes (actually a berry) taste so bland. You can improve that taste by putting them in sunlight in your kitchen window until they turn a deeper red also NEVER store fresh tomatoes in the refrigerator.

I love home grown Tomatoes and grow my own, as well as hot ppers and hot banana peppers. you just cant beat the ripened on the vine tase, specially when fertilized properly.

the best way to pick out tomatoes at the market is to smell them...tf they smell like tomatoes they will be better than the ones with no smell, let em ripen a few days in a sunny window and its better than otherwise....cheers!

Many stores are also pumping them full of water before packing them to make them looking bigger and more plump.

because spending less money, less time and less effort on a grow is better than the opposite...low quality can be grown outdoors whilst high quality is almost always indoors (greenhouse)...

there are 2 types of growers:

1) money launderers
2) the ones who feel the dump price and are forced to grow cheap too

there are 2 types of buyers (bulk)

1) wall mart type stores...they only care about constant supply and low price...no way a quality grower can even compete
2) money launderers...they buy cheap shit for pennies, export it and """"sell abroad"""" for premium $$$ and import this money back home with almost no tax because agriculture is not taxed or very little tax compared to any other business activity they have abroad, be it legal or not...

sometimes the same train, with the same cargo, enters the country and leaves, multiple times :1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh fruit has no serial # and is probably the best and easiest way to launder money...

the only reason I can produce quality is because I do not rely on the $$$ from sale...it is a side project I give no shits about...I hold a monopoly in a small town for most of the year simply because I can dump...I lose this during the summer because imports from better climates out-dump me...

it is a fact: crops grow better under the communist sun :thumbsup

pornguy 01-29-2016 06:49 AM

It also depends on where they come from.

The Mexican ones are not as good or as big as the ones from Cuba and places like that.

your guys potatoes are pretty brutal too. No wonder sweet potatoes are becoming a thing, they are the only ones left with any flavour to them.

The "I think I recall..." part got my attention.

Your memories aren't real for the most part. Memory also doesn't work in the way we prefer to believe (like a recording that can be played back). False memories are ask created with disturbingly ease and are equally convincing. If you begin to probe any memory, you'll start to realize there are actually very few details you can recall and much of what you do recall, is fabricated in the process. The most accurate memories you have are those associated with really strong emotions, trauma or that are recalled with greater frequency.

Those chickens are a specific breed. We keep laying hens year round and get a batch of meat chickens to put in the freezer. They are a completely different bird than your average chicken. Their appetite is voracious. The wife calls them the fuzzy yellow piranha. If there's food around they would sit in front of it and gorge themselves until they keeled over if they could. They are unusually wide in the breast and are extremely good at converting food into meat. It takes only 8 weeks to go from day old chick to 8 lb dressed chickens. I actually hate picking them up because they feel a sum of their parts.

yeah that's certainly what triggered my thought on it, but i still recollect tasty avocados from years past that weren't from the neighbor. i know i've liked avocado for a long time, the flavor is so unique, so i must have had flavorful ones early.

i was informed though that the latest ones we had were from a warehouse grocer. they were completely 100% void of flavor. and they turned to mush quickly after slicing open.

the taste is mind blowing. the neighbor's avocados are easily 4-5x bigger than the store bought ones too and super firm even when ripe. the funny part is their tree only produces maybe 30 avocados a year, we're lucky to get the ones we get and have to do some serious pleading our case to get those! :1orglaugh

the neighbor's variety is Hall, they easily weight > pound, more like 2 pounds i bet.

Hall. A relative of the Choquette and similar in shape and size, the Hall avocado has nuttier, drier and thicker flesh, though still juicy and fruity. Season: October through November.

i worded it that way intentionally, btw. i'm not sure where my Mom got them when I was growing up, i'm assuming the grocer, but we did get produce from produce stands then too. and when i was thinking about it, i actually think i've been stifling the fact they've been so very bland for a long time now. of course, they usually accompany other foods and spices so that also masks things.

Do you cull yourself or take to a butcher? I've been thinking about doing it for over a year, but I couldn't cull them myself.

Because they are picked raw and then "ripen up" during worldwide shipping. And because of commercial production cycle (withthe use of all kind of chemicals and possibly gen modified - to grow faster, bigger etc)

Steroids and antibiotics. And not just chickens - beef, ham, fish, shrimps, etc.

Pretty much everything is artificially grown nowadays.

I thought about doing the culling myself. But I'd want to build/buy a plucker to do it. There's a place nearby that does it for $3 a bird, which I think is more than fair. I pick them up loose in bags of 3 and then do the rest of the butchering myself before vacuum sealing them.

I keep a few whole (minus the wings since I take them off all of the birds), the rest, I remove necks and backbones for stock and either keep them halved or quartered. They are big, so half usually does dinner for 3 and lunch the next day with some left over. I think I calculated the total cost per bird at around $13-15 (day old chicks/feed/Processing)

So you agree with me. Most tomato growers (not launderers) rely on $$$. Thus they do not produce quality because they rely on more $$$. Nothing to do with laundering.
Laundering is irrelevant to all this. Another topic. Take your example, you produce quality and you could launder money with that quality just as well.

It would be the same for you to explain huge chickens grown on steroids on money laundering. No, that is because growers want more $$$. Same with crappy tomatoes, they can get more cash by growing crappy.
Laundering is irrelevant.

This is simple. Different species of potatoes taste different. Ones are with lots of flavor, others have very little flavor. And those with little flavor have bigger output so mass farmers usually choose those species.
