Actually, in my pretty extensive experience, compared to the rest of the world, the US is MUCH less jealous and disapproving of people who enjoy success. In Europe, many people tend to think that someone driving a flashy car is an asshole, in the US people just tend to think that it's cool. We tend to approve of consumerism here.

At least he does something for charity too. Personally I don't mind people like this as long as they aren't arrogant, and they didn't seem arrogant, they are just showy.

I think people getting funny in Europe has a lot to do with the weather. Once you get to California it's sunny and everyone feels happier, so they have better things to do than envy other people.

Success is(generally) not welcome in Europe, the same way you American cheer for it. I think its your winner mentality that is the biggest difference. As a kid in school you dont cheer for winners the same way you do in the US. It's a shame really
