Yes, it is true. Many cities in middle east were like that. Beirut was another riviera, etc. Until US and friends started sticking their noses up everybody's asses.

None of who blame the U.S. for ills that befell Cuba. You can see Cuba on a clear day from Key West, and the Ruskies tried to plant nukes there at the height of the cold war. Not gonna happen, compadre. Fidel wasn't on the Nobel Peace prize list either.

For Afghanistan , let`s say that the US would not have armed the islamic mujahadeens to defeat the russians .... take it from there ...

The Mujahadeen didn't come around until well after there were several rebellions and a Muslim leader overthrew the king (this is how the OP's photo illustrates that change). The leadership of the Mujahadeen, which is now the Taliban, originally came out of Pakistan. The U.S. covertly funneled money through Pakistan to support the Mujahadeen not because they were allies, but because the U.S. was in a Cold War with Russia.

As I said in my previous post, Afghanistan was completely fucked well before the U.S., or Russia had any involvement. The U.S. could somewhat be blamed for the Taliban being in power, since they evolved from the Mujahadeen in which the U.S. supported. But to blame it solely on the U.S. is historically inaccurate.

Threads like this show why history is able to repeat itself over and over again. Humans have such a short term memory. 50 years is not history, 100 years is not history. Those are a blip on the map of time.
