Of course people don't want war. Why should a poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best thing he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece?

I don't believe the military is a racketeering thing....

The military spends money if we go to war or not. No one says "Hey, we need to go to war with Iraq in six months so we need to order another hundred jets". Those jets are ordered, made, and paid for long before then.

I was reading about the Osprey aircraft last night, and it's stunning how much we've spent on this - The first year year we spent $8 billion, the following year $27 billion, and had yet to produce anything other than two prototypes. Keep in mind the Osprey program started in the late 1970s after the Iranian hostage crisis, and these planes weren't deployed until 2002.

Do we spend more money when we go to war? We sure do. But we spend most of that on gas costs, food, and ammo. Not big ticket items like planes and ships.

The tax dollars are there to be harvested by whoever gets there first, the US Oligarchs own the companies who the tax dollars get paid to during war, so hence it's in their interest to get a war going, they also get to benefit from new resources in the conquered territory.

props to that guy

even if some of what he mentioned is inaccurate i have the feeling he's keeping it much, much more real than a typical recruiter

I don't really agree about his the corporate conspiracy stuff, but he is right about the military mission. ALL MILITARIES exist to enforce the political will of governments. That is why the other part of the oath, which he did not mention, was "to obey the orders of those appointed above me".

I have to say that I would be conflicted if my son decided to join up. Having served myself, I'm torn between wanting for him to have such a uniquely intense experience, and of course fearing for his life being lost in a pointless and unconstitutional war of US international aggression.

To an extent, yes.

But the military spends war no matter what. The military doesn't say "we are going to war with ISIS later this year, so we need $5 billion for new jets. The military plans out decades in advance. The Osprey I mentioned is a great example - After the Iranian Hostage Crisis, the military saw the need for helicopters that we both much faster and had a much longer range. It took them twenty years to get it off the ground. Right now we are designing and testing aircraft that will be around for the next three to four decades.

It's an interesting process.

neither does the mob...they just keep goons and thugs armed and call them when needed to "protect their interests" just like the US gov...

peace is being privatized by the US corporations, the profits from war are clear and obvious, and the "threat" from iraq or iran is completely non existent...

one difference between the US gov and the mob, the mob will be nicer to you and you have less chances of being killed :2 cents:

That gas, food, ammo etc is all bought from or contracted out to other companies. A company like Haliburton can make tens, if not hundreds of millions just supplying food, toilets and basic services to soldiers who are deployed in a war zone.

Fuck the military industrial complex and this guy, I hope he chokes on his breakfast. War mongering piece of shit.

On the Iraqi thing....

Just imagine if some foreign military force was driving around your neighborhood in tanks and Humvees, and their troops were going house to house to harass you every day -- and possibly shoot you. You'd be plenty pissed for the rest of your life. We really had no fucking reason to be there doing that...and the loss of American lives and their families lives that have been changed forever sicken me. Our military doesn't deserve to be used in that way.
