Why Not Limit New User Posting?

If USER is younger than 1 year old, why not limit them to just 2 posts per day. That's plenty and if you hang around longer, you get rewarded by having your limits pulled. You won't hang around longer than a year unless you have some loyalty so you're less likely to act like a dick.

Problem solved.

Seems like a good idea. Gfy could use a few more moderators as well... To delete this shit

If you limit new users to 2 posts per day for a year then no one new will stick around. Maybe 2 thread starts per day?

Just give someone who's been around a while the ability to lock an account down but not delete anything. Easy enough.

I'm not sure what vBulletin 3.X allows but I know higher versions allow you to customize all kinds of accounts and settings.
This ruins it for other nicks coming on. lol.

Yep, that's what I meant but still someone can flood with posts on inactive threads and then you have a new problem. How about:

(1) Limit USER to 2 thread starts per day if they are under 1 yr old since join.

(2) Limit USER to 6 posts (within threads) per day if they are under 1 yr old since join.

As long as USER knows the limits come off after a year, I'm most wouldn't even breach those limits since we know the vast majority hardly post much, if anything. We have many more lurkers than posters.

This doesn't solve the problem of spam/flooding etc so you still need more admins but it will severely limit the damage and disturbance when it actually does happen.

You'd have to program that and/or would take a lot longer to implement. Too many logical AND, ORs, blah blah blah.

My method would be much easier. Just make it so someone who is trustworthy is online in a certain timezone. All joking aside I think Paul Markham would do alright with this. Paul doesn't act up unless someone utterly bullies him (like DamianJ).

4chan (before they implemented md5 hash checks on images) would occasionally get overrun with massive amounts of very illegal content. Doesn't happen anymore, mostly. Usually those posts would go haywire on some random day with no mods present.
They just had to hire people willing to take less powerful mod positions.

Bottom line if you start locking down any features from what used to be then you getting members fleeing.

This is just one guy who gets overly inflamed behind the keyboard. I remember I trolled Donny a little bit and could sense utter/murderous rage. He contacted me via ICQ, email, anything he could find on me. Told me I was a "faggot" and that me and the whole family were going to get wikied. lol. Donny Long turning wiki into a verb, LOL.
This happened about 2 years ago.

Sounds like a good idea.

Could also have some kind of content filter, which automatically bans, or mutes, a user account if the first X number of posts contain trigger words such as Heater Dxxx.

Or it could count string similarity to already banned content. For example using PHP's similar_text() function or calculcate the levenshtein distance etc.

Currently Donny alters all his posts, by increasing a number, thus creating a completely different MD5 hash for each post. Using similar_text() or levenshtein() would easily catch the same message - even when a number is being incremented each time.

It should be quite easy to make such a cleanup cronjob - to counter Donny's spam cronjob. :)

it will work great first time, then 2nd time he will simply append a longer string to pass the filters... and even if that fails, what's stopping someone from posting 100% unique random garbage?

Good idea. Or limit the number of thread that those new users can start only on the week-end when admins are not working
