Fifty Pounds Lighter

In 2013 somewhere between The Phoenix Forum and TES, I discovered that not only was I fat but I had moved over into being obese. (Some of you here on GFY were less than nice about it I might add.) So, I went on a diet and starting exercising. For the past two years, every morning I've run, hit the basketball court, and biked twenty miles - nearly every day.

In 2013 I was 255 lbs, and now I am down to 202 lbs.

Here on GFY someone in a thread a year ago about military training someone mocked me saying I would never be able to make the minimum requirements for Marine Corps boot camp again. Well, I started training with the local Marine recruiters office two weeks ago in a program designed to make young recruits eligible for boot camp. The running is easy, the sit ups will be difficult, and chin ups will be a huge challenge.

Penny24Seven 10-27-2015 09:57 AM

You were in the military? Next thing you want us to believe is you drove a mustang.

Sly 10-27-2015 09:58 AM

What was your diet like? That's a pretty good workout routine for it to take two years to burn 50 pounds. One hour of biking at that weight is around 1100 cal alone.

Congratulations of course, that's a nice cut, but you must be eating like shit. Work on fixing that next.

L-Pink 10-27-2015 09:59 AM

Good for you :thumbsup:thumbsup

I originally started off at a slower pace, biking ten miles every other day. And my eating wasn't nearly as good.

I am looking for slow term, long burn. My goal is to keep the weight off.

JJ Gold 10-27-2015 10:27 AM

I wasn't aware that you biked or played basketball. What else have you been hiding?

They did you a favor. Being obese is not ok and the people who are should feel shame.

I have let myself go once in my life and lost 60 pounds. I will never return to that. People who do not take weight loss seriously need to feel shame in order to change.

Being overweight is simply being lazy. It is an excuse and it is disgusting.

It was highly motivating. For a while I bookmarked that post and every so often I would come across it and it just made me more motivated to loose weight.

brassmonkey 10-27-2015 11:23 AM

Goldmaniac 10-27-2015 11:24 AM

Congratulations my friend!

bronco67 10-27-2015 11:25 AM

Good for you, but you may be over-exercising. I couldn't imagine doing 20 miles every day in addition to all the other things. Although, my area is very hilly so 20 miles feels like 40.

You must be taking in a lot of calories to not wither away.

But you're right about the long term goal thing. Most people have this mentality of always needing to "lose 10 pounds in a couple of weeks". They fuck their system up and are doomed to repeat it over and over. The trick is to condition your metabolism to prefer burning fat and building muscle, and that takes time. Once I got my body into that state, I've been realizing it would be hard work to actually undo it. Like I would have to stop exercising and eat donuts and ice cream for a few weeks or months.

Totally agree on this too. Your back/shoulders/arms look sick after doing a ton of pull ups a day. I would say the only thing missing here is (dare I say it?) squats. Nobody likes them, but they seriously SHRED weight and also up your strength and stability. NEVER SKIP LEG DAY!

Itchy 10-27-2015 11:58 AM

Congrats man !! Keep up the good work!

RyuLion 10-27-2015 12:03 PM

Congratz man!

J. Falcon 10-27-2015 01:06 PM

Congrats to you man, sometimes feeling disgusted and ashamed of yourself is what's required to hit rock bottom and realize you need to make a change.

Sounds cool. When I was going to gym pull ups were in back category. Had no idea I could have skipped arms and shoulders days and just do pull ups instead :thumbsup

chin ups (palms facing you) pumps up your arms. I do both pullups and chinups with it, as well as the grips pointing at you for neutral grip.

I would break that thing in seconds. The architraves in your doorways were never ever designed to bear that so of weight - they are decorative.

The exercise is a fantastic thing, however don't be surprised if you break your coccyx bone one day when you're using it :2 cents:

Get a cheap pull up bar, don't take up much room, are far sturdier and offer far more exercises or just go outside and find yourself a tree :thumbsup

@ OP

Well done Rochard, I started training around the same time as you and have never felt better. You should maybe enter a few 10k (6mile?) runs, they're a lot of fun.

dillonaire 10-27-2015 05:14 PM

How do you find motivation? It is boring and depressing for me and main problem is to get real motivation for everyday routine

For me it's been heavy deadlifts. I squat too, but if there was only one exercise I could do, it would be deadlifts.

I started going to the gym back in 2010 or 2011, lost a little bit of weight, but honestly i hated it. It wasn't until I started exercising outside that I found it fun. Once I started loosing weight I found all of the motivation I needed.

Good job.

Just keep up regular exercise and it shouldn't be bad.

Putting on weight is easier with age but as long as you are mindful before consuming something and get regular exercise you should be fine.

I've got a terrible case of bursitis on my hip, about the only thing I can do now is walk. I can't even ride a bicycle or use an elliptical without a lot of pain. :disgust
I may have to start swimming or something else.
