Russian Presence Near Undersea Cables Concerns U.S.

WASHINGTON ? Russian submarines and spy ships are aggressively operating near the vital undersea cables that carry almost all global Internet communications, raising concerns among some American military and intelligence officials that the Russians might be planning to attack those lines in times of tension or conflict.

The issue goes beyond old Cold War worries that the Russians would tap into the cables ? a task American intelligence agencies also mastered decades ago. The alarm today is deeper: The ultimate Russian hack on the United States could involve severing the fiber-optic cables at some of their hardest-to-access locations to halt the instant communications on which the West?s governments, economies and citizens have grown dependent.

Silly Russians. Don't they know how dangerous the cables are? I'm glad to not have their education.

Maybe they're worried about a collision with the NSA or GCHQ

Makes sense -- in a time of war you disrupt the enemy's communications where you can.

Of course, if it is proven (suspected or assumed) that you cut undersea communications cables cables that would be an act of war ... Do you really want that?

We all will die someday, because nobody lives forever. A death in the nuclear fire is not worse than a death of old age in the bed when you literally shit yourself...

Only small percentage would die "in the nuclear fire", everyone else would die slow and painful death from radiation poisoning... so sounds a bit less fun than dieing of old age... :2 cents:

Yes. Just not only because of nuclear poisoning of course. The most will die of cold and starvation. On the other hand, almost all people here (including you and me) are living in big cities, and we are targets of the first strike. So we have nothing to worry about - we'll die in a fraction of second.
