anyone recommend a UK accountant?

ive got my first self assessment coming up, and want somebody to get my books straight and audit my past year, give tax advice etc..

anyone recommend anyone that is familiar with our biz?

Not in Manchester... there's one down south who works with adult wm's. He was recommended to me, but he charges a lot more than my accountant.....

See if I can get his details for you.....

Just curious though, in all time I've been doing this, I've never had to say that I'm working in the adult industry. My accountant simply thinks I do web design and take commissions from sites I build, why tell them more than you have to?

a1ka1ine 03-20-2003 08:29 AM

why not tell them? if they know you are in the adult biz maybe they can recommend things that can save us money - and we arent doing anything illegal :-) so i would be comfortable telling them about my porn exploits!

when you say more expensive.. how much are we talking? i have absolutely no idea how much all this is going to cost :-z

if you have hardcore sites I wouldn't go adverstising to anyone you are a porn webmaster.

...just say you are a photo agency, or a model agency, or a whatever.

They're all bitches anyway.

why would it matter? what downsides do you see? hardcore isnt illegal over here? :-s

the legality of hardcore sites is not clear in the UK. Heck, hardcore videos have only just been able to be on sale in licenced sex shops.

About double the price what I pay mine.....

I'll call the guy who uses the firm now, and try get you an accurate figure what it cost them.

Price depends on how many hours of bookwork they need to do and much they think they can screw out of you. The more receipts and paperwork they have to look at, the bigger the bill.

a1ka1ine:

You've got quite a while to do it! Self-assessment returns are duue by the end of Sept for the tax year ending this April. Accountant completed returns are due by the end of Jan 2004.

If you're just looking for them to work out how much tax you should pay, then pretty much any accountant will be able to do it for you. Ask them if they have experience in the Internet / Computer sole trading sector, after all you don't want to be paying them while you teach them about your business. They will also advise you about your VAT position as well.

You should probably tell them what you do, especially if you want business advice from them, but it's not totally neccessary. Our accountants know exactly what we do and just wanted URLs, passwords etc to check out our stuff.

If you can, complete as much of the paperwork & addition yourself. Divide it up into incomings and outgoings. An experienced acountant will be able to tell you what you can and cannot claim for. If you give them a bundle of disorganised receipts and bank statements, they will charge you more than if you give them a spreadsheet with totals on it which they can back-check to your organised receipts and statements.
