It's not pizza; but I don't really like pizza

Admittedly, the local pizza joints probably have no clue who I am, so the likelihood of any of them giving me a free pizza is pretty slim. Luckily pizza does not really fit into the grand scheme of things as far as I am concerned; beer however is another thing.

I got invited by Guinness to attend an advanced tasting of their brand new Nitro IPA, which was held tonight in Hollywood. To be honest, I get invited to things like this all the time and if they are in LA I turn down the offer 9/10 times because I hate driving to LA, because it requires me drive there during rush hour. Since Guinness is my deserted island/can only have one beer choice I accepted the invite which was held at The Larchmont. If you are in the area, they have very good food.

I was doing some research on this new release and most of the reviews were pretty negative. Of course, these negative reviews came from people on the east side of the country so I did not pay much attention because I have no idea if a guy from Philly has a clue what an IPA should taste like. One thing I noticed was that everyone was reviewing a can of Guinness Nitro IPA, so naturally, I expected we would be drinking cans of beer at this dinner.

Was I ever surprised when I saw that they actually had a keg of the golden brew. It is the first keg to come to the US and I was among the first three or four people in the US to try this brew.

It is not a "west coast" IPA by any stretch, but it is heavily hopped and the nitro just smooths out any bitterness so it turns it into a smooth, easy drinking IPA that went really well with out meal.

They brought out cans so we could compare the two and I definitely enjoyed the draught version more, but the can got better as it lost it chill.

It should start hitting major markets in a week or two, it is worth checking out if you enjoy trying different beers.

It's better than pizza, right? :)

Did you like it in the can?

My nephew is drinking some languana ipa or some shit. Tastes like shit. But then I'm a ranger kind of guy. Will definitely give Coors light a vacation to give this one a try.

Don't like pizza? Blah.

I run the "Pizza Lovers Association" on Facebook. I started this about a year go. I don't pay for pizza any more.

This was a local pizza place when I dared them to make a octipus pizza...

(holy crap I was fat back then!)

I always think of IPA as a more 'gentle' beer - Old men sitting in the corner of a pub chatting over old times sort of thing...

'Nitro IPA' almost seems a contradiction.....

Pizza & beer was a match made in heaven. Craft beer & gourmet pizza, well, you just know some marriages will work out going in.

But that's just my perspective. What with all the great specialty pizza shops in my immediate vicinity as well as a wealth of finely-tuned craft beers (one or two award-winners made locally in fact) I have it pretty good. As in shockingly good.

Lagunitas ... a little bitter for you based on what I know of your beer habits. This nitro IPA has virtually no bitterness due to the nitrogen.

Will look for it, but the ABV seems rather low for a Dubbel

So, I happened to spend this afternoon with last night's hosts and I brought up your comment.

This beer has only been released in the US thus far, but they think that when it is released in Ireland and the UK it is going to sell like wildfire.

I am going to guess that IF you drink IPAs they are probably English IPAs using Old World ingredients and they are typically a lot different than the IPAs we drink in Southern California in that the hops are more in your face with the bitterness that vvvv doesn't like.

The Guinness Nitro IPA uses 5 different hops and then uses one of them again to dry hop it. I know that this would probably be pretty close to a west coast IPA with bitterness (even with the Guinness yeast and malt), but the nitrogen just makes it so smooth and creamy.

If interested, you can see all the pics and my comments at Guinness Nitro IPA Advanced Tasting & Dinner at The Larchmont | Craft Beer Guy
