Should've charged him with attempting to destroy evidence, too. :1orglaugh

This is pretty amusing..

I love our northern border.

To the south our neighbors smuggle IN narcotics and illegals. While our northern neighbors smuggle OUT cheese and chicken wings.

Haha how embarrassing - Buffalo has awesome food. Canada has no grocery store that rivals Wegmans.

j3rkules 09-19-2015 10:28 AM

Sprinkle some parmesan on him.

Purdie received a sentence of one year in jail, which he served in an American prison. Part of his plea agreement with U.S. officials was that he would testify in court about the cheese smuggling operation.

Why did he serve in US prison? Is that illegal to take out cheese out of US?
usually it is the receiving country who charges for contraband.

I admit I did not read the article, just the quote of serving jail time in US :error

? More than $141,000 in product had been purchased.

? About $325,000 in duties had been evaded.
Doesn't make much sense... I know customs are necessary to a certain degree for economic-stability, but sometimes, these numbers just don't make sense.

This will be long ...

Story sounds a little cheesy to me.

First of all, guy was busted earlier for smuggling steroids. So this is not a simple one off scenario.

Second, the guy was law enforcement and was abusing his powers by showing his badge to customs so they would not inspect his vehicle during his smuggle runs. This is probably why they would be coming down hard on him.

As for why would he smuggle the product, sounds like it's cheaper on the United States side. He would buy it from the US, take it back to Canada and sell it to restaurants. So he was also likely evading taxes.

Multiple offense. Abusing powers. Smuggling. Tax evasion.

Why was he jailed in US and not in Canada which was the "wronged" country in this operation?

He was smuggling steroids. Smuggle drugs in or out of the United States and you will get charged by the United States.

There isn't a chain in the WORLD that rivals Wegmans. That said, there aren't too many of them in Buffalo, as compared to Tops which is based in Buffalo (and sucks ass in comparison).

it isn't but there are limits. they don't allow for commercial purposes. So groceries are fine but you can't stock shelves in a store or for a restaurant without declaring it and paying taxes.
